I posted a while ago about my 11 year old having issues transitioning to the middle school, particularly in on eclass (English). The teacher tells me he is defiant, won't stop talking, isn't turning in his HW, and is failing. DS is now sitting by himself in that class, is grounded forever, I have to check every scrap of HW, and I'm on a weekly email check-in with the teacher 
Well, I called his reading teacher today to give her a heads up about the project that was coming her way today. DS is a VERY advanced reader, and is doing his project on a book that is, ultimatelly, about a school shooting. While his analysis is really thought provoking and has provided so many teachable moments, I didn't want the teacher to freak out.
When she called me back, she proceeded to tell me that she has been in constant discussions with DS about the book, that he is an amazing and brilliant young man, he's one in a milion as far as a reader and writer. SHe said, "I'm excited to have a student do a book that can provoke a serious class discussion about violence and bullying, and I can't think of a better kid to address it than your son." When I was getting off the phone she said, "You've raised an amazing young man, regardless of what other teachers who shall remain nameless have to say about him."
Thank you, reading teacher. I needed that.

Sounds like he just needs to be challenged. He's probably bored out of his mind in his regular classes, and that's how he responds. It happens to a lot of bright kids. Seeing that he's that involved, interested, and insightful on this topic shows that he can put the effort out when it's something that challenges and interests him.
