New diagnosis / support groups in nassau?
Hi Everyone,
Hope you all had a great holiday. Just had a couple of questions and an update. My ds was originally diagnosised with apraxia, we just had an updated diagnosis of him being on the spectrum. The problem is it seems that the two doctors don't exactly agree. One doctor says PDD (high functioning with an IQ of 131) the other thinks my ds was incorrectly diagnosised with apraxia and is diagnosising him with Aspergers.
Flirst question, does it really matter at this point what the label is? He is 6 and in 1st. We are in the process of getting him into a specialized school, our district is having a tough time and doesn't seem to have experience with high functioning autistic children. Their thoughts are there is nothing wrong with him, he is just being manipulative and stubborn. We made an appointment with the Cody Center to get another opinion.
Also wanted to know if there were any social skills groups that anyone participates in and if there are some support groups that you attend. My dh and I have know for awhile that he was possibly on the spectrum (we are both teachers). At this point I want to dive right in and learn all I can to help my little guy, not to mention maybe find some kids that are like him that he can "play" with. Would love to have some normal conversations with other parents without constantly feeling that I have to explain about my son.
Thanks!

Have you looked into your districts SEPTA? Ours has a monthly "support group" meeting and you can meet a bunch of parents and set up some playdates.

I would try SEPTA--our local group meets during the day, so I haven't been, but they have evening lectures. Some SEPTA groups also have social skills groups for kids.
The JCCs (Plainview in particular) have groups for kids, not sure about parents. There is an organization in Port Washington that has some groups for kids also, called Steps to Socialization. Again, this is more for the kids, and I think they need to be in school, so I haven't checked them out.
