My job is killing me.
I work in sales.
My boss, my mentor, and my best friend was let go on Thursday. I am beyond upset. I have been taking anxiety meds to even GO to work the last week. (I knew it was coming)
He was let go because our numbers are bad. He is the scapegoat. Its a shame because he was the only one there that knows what he is doing...we got sold about a year ago and have all new upper management since. They obviously weren't going to blame themselves.
they promoted someone that was my peer into his role--My new boss is the one who really threw him under the bus. There are now 4 of us left to cover the job of 8 people.
That being said...I have a few options...
a-stay til I find something else (paid job search) b-quit whether I find something else or not when I collect commissions in feb c-milk all the time off I have and then quit d-try to get fired so I can collect severance
Thoughts? lol
addtl question...i am FB friends with my new boss. Do I delete him?

Re: My job is killing me.
Take some time off now to clear your head.
Work on your resume and contact some recruiters. Then go back and do what you need to do while starting your job search.
Now is a really tough time to be out of work, so stay as long as possible. Just know in the back of your mind that it's not a permanent situation and that you WILL get a new job.
As far as Facebook, block him from seeing you posts and hide his. DO NOT delete.
Good Luck!

Re: My job is killing me.
I agree with the above poster.
I also never understood the mentality of one trying to purposely get fired.
I don't think UE is guaranteed for everybody if they get fired, and I also personally, would worry about my reputation as a result in being able to find new work.
It really is a very small world out there in the workforce, everyone knows everyone it seems through somebody, and gossip (like it or not) runs rampant when it comes to a potential new hire.

Re: My job is killing me.
I agree you can block your new boss from seeing your posts (and this goes for co-workers too). Never post about work in an open forum.
I'm not sure why this isn't an option but what about staying to see how the new manager handles things & take it from there?
Getting fired is never an option I would take. Ever. If you are truly unhappy, look for another job while you're working. The saying "It's easier to get a job while you have a job" is true. It's also your way of negotiating your salary.
Even if you get another job (don't tell a soul - not even a friend at work), you can attempt to negotiate a severance package - although I don't think you're entitled to one, they may want that piece of paper signed saying you won't sue. Severance is at a company's option. They don't have to give you severance. Severance is a contract & for a contract to be valid there has to be an exchange between parties. They pay you & you give up some rights to sue.

Re: My job is killing me.
The situation sucks, but I have heard from several people that it is easier to get a job while employed then unemployed. I guess because it doesn't look good on your resume that you are unemployed. Hang in there, as someone said, take some time to clear your head and work on your resume. But keep your job. Sorry you're dealing with this.

Re: My job is killing me.
I def wouldnt quit unless it became that unbearable.....I can't think that it has gotten to that point yet if your old mgr was just let go in the past week.
Stick it out a little and see if things get better. ITs a transitional period right now plus you may just be in shock that the previous mgr was let go. Give it a month or so to let the dust settle. Then make a plan of action.
It doesnt hurt in the meantime to keep your options open and start putting out your resume or contacting recruiters

Re: My job is killing me.
I also wanted to add that I am sorry this was a friend that was let go.
At my last job, someone I was very friendly with recruited me to come work at his new company.
He was fired the first day I started. Talk about awkward!
Come to find out, another wackadoo employee had thrown him under the bus too..........although I also later found out that he had done some shady things to try to "up the numbers". Biggest mistake was that the wackadoo girl was involved in it too.......but he got in trouble because he supervised her but never said anything.
So while I do feel that it is okay to be angry about the whole situation, we often really don't know what is going on behind the scenes with someone, and shouldn't put our personal relationships into the decision.
Your new boss could end up doing wonders for the company.
A lot of people don't like my boss because he has a no-nonsense attitude and is not all "fluffy and social workey" like a lot of people have been used to.
However, he has always been very fair with all the employees, is good at what he does business-wise and has made the program grow tremendously.
Because of him I now have a ton of perks at my job, and basically, a position was created for me that I really enjoy.
I still think it's good to take some time though and for anyone, looking or not, to always send out resumes.

Re: My job is killing me.
Thanks for the advice ladies. I've been so angry that I think it just helped me to write it down. I'm still just really sad. We worked together for 6 years and I spend more time at work than I do with my DH so it almost feels like part of my life just ended.
My new manager is a micro manager. He was my peer and he is an anal retentive person. I do NOT work well in that kind of environment, i'm much more of a self motivator and I don't like being checked up on every 5 seconds. I can also say that that works for my as i've grown my billing by 700% over the 4 years that I've been selling under my last boss who was very hands off...(the two years before that I was in a sales support role)
I know its easier to find a job while I have a job and I am kinda close to something but its gonna take some time (as it always does). I'm not sure if i'm gonna lose my mind by then, thats all. My friends are amazed that I'm not in an institution with the chaos that is my job...

Re: My job is killing me.
K---Do you get paid out for unused time? If not, I'd probably use as much time as you can now, job search and get the hell out of there.

Yes but we accrue it so i'm not sure how much they'll "let me" use. I have some stuff planned for Feb/March so I'll eat through a few days...but we'll see! The thought of going back there makes me ill.

Re: My job is killing me.
I would try to stick it out and if you're still unhappy, start looking. Other companies want the talent that their competitors have. Use that to your advantage. It is absolutely better to negotiate when you are employed. Also, you mentioned "paid search". Did you mean you giving $ to someone to help you find a job?

Re: My job is killing me.
LOL! Okay, I just wanted to be sure.
I'm sorry your friend was let go. It's hard when that happens. I hope you find something better sooner rather than later.
