I wish Long island houses weren't so expensive. what we pay for sh itty houses people in other states get 5bedrom 5 bathroom mansions, it makes me want to move out of state! but i dont know where it would go.  End rant !

Actually LI is in line with most metro area near a big City.
You can get a mansion for "nothing" in the middle of Montana. You will be nowhere near water and NYC.
But Chicago is $$$, Boston, San Francisco, Seattle, etc..
Those are all very expensive Cities.

ITA! It is stupid priced here. I would love to move one day..........we shall see.

True, a lot of areas of the country have less expensive housing, BUT the salaries people earn in those areas match the cost of living. So a $200K home in the rural midwest might be the equivalent of a $400K home here, based on affordability for the population. Affordability is all relative.
It's great for people who relocate from the tri-state area, though, if they can save up a lot of money here and then by a home in a less expensive area with a huge down payment, or even all cash. When I worked at my old law firm, several associates there saved up and then relocated down south, either to the Atlanta area or Charlotte, NC, and were able to buy fabulous homes that would have been out of the realm of possiblity in NY, even with a big law firm salary.

agreed.... We looked upstate and in NC. (we have family in both places) But it's all about the job, thats why we are staying here. If I had a choice I would be packing tonight and not think twice about it.

ITA! It's so frustating to see what we could have gotten for our money out of state!  But the trade off would have been having to live far away from out families, so a small house for a lot of money beat getting huge house in the middle of no where.

I want to move out of state one day but we will only move of my dh loses his job. I could make a similar salary in another state so it would be great! I want sick house for cheap! My only concern would be that I wouldn't like the standard construction. I have been in many model homes in the south and they were somewhat cheap looking inside even if they were huge homes!

It nices that they have such great careers to be transferable.

I hear you! I would make the same regardless of where I lived, which makes me crazy. The money would go sooo much further elsewhere. But all our family is here on LI, and I grew up away from my extended family. I think I really missed out b/c of it. So here we stay....
Plus we have awesome friends here. I guess we're just too rooted :)

At the same time, Charlotte is not even comparable to NYC.
So it's not really comparing apple to apple when people say houses are cheaper in NC.

I guess it depends on the city. I was surprised to hear that my cousin who relocated to Houston did not take a salary cut (apparently there is no state income tax in Texas) and you can get a gorgeous house there for 250k. He was trying to convince me to relocate there but I don't think I could ever leave my family here.

You don't have to go down south to get a better deal.
Long Island's biggest problem is the property taxes. It is expensive to live anywhere near a major metropolitan area. Boston, San Fran, Washington DC, LA..... all expensive.
We just moved to southern CT (Fairfield County). I am still the same distance from Manhattan that I was when I was on LI, only now I am on the mainland.
Our house here in CT's property taxes are less than half of comparable properties in Nassau County.
Dh's grandparents pay 14K AFTER their numerous discounts for a house in Levittown. His stepMIL pays almost 18K in Amity Village. Neither of those houses are updated or anything, just nicely maintained. That is INSANE.
The property taxes on our house are less than 5K and the house was on the market for a good 75K less than a comparable home in a comparable area of Nassau/Western Suffolk.
And the old theory of people making more in our area is no longer really true. When DH was looking, he found that he could make the same (or in some cases, MORE) as he was here. He took a job OFF LI that is paying more, has better benefits and better hours than any job he interviewed for on LI for his field. When I moved from Boston to LI 5 years ago, I took a 6k/yr pay CUT to live on LI. Also, it's definitely important to consider the whether the QUALITY of your life, sometimes the quality can outweigh the dollar signs
