Bye Bye Stanton & Quantrill!!!!

June 30, 2005 --

BALTIMORE - Mike Stanton and Paul Quantrill are the initial blood stains of the Yankees' putrid first three months, The Post has learned.

The veteran relievers were designated for assignment after last night's game against the Orioles was rained out.

Granted they weren't axed to make room for Roger Clemens or Mark Kotsay, but it's clear the summit meeting in Tampa Tuesday has claimed its initial victims.

Re: Bye Bye Stanton & Quantrill!!!!

Here is more on this story:

BALTIMORE -- The New York Times reported late Wednesday that relievers Mike Stanton and Paul Quantrill may have pitched their last games for the Yankees.
According to The Times report, the two relievers "shook hands and exchanged hugs with teammates and club personnel" after Wednesday night's rainout in Baltimore. The report said that Quantrill would not comment after leaving the clubhouse, while Stanton reportedly said, "You can read between the lines."

When reached by MLB.com late Wednesday night, Quantrill declined to comment.

Stanton's last appearance came in the Yankees' 5-4 loss on Tuesday, when he allowed a game-winning home run to Baltimore's Brian Roberts in the bottom of the tenth inning at Camden Yards. In 28 appearances this season, the 38-year-old reliever posted a 1-2 record and 7.07 ERA.

The 36-year-old Quantrill last pitched against the Mets on Saturday, allowing two runs over two innings in the Yankees' 10-3 loss at Yankee Stadium. He has a 1-0 record and 6.75 ERA this season.

The Yankees recalled right-hander Jason Anderson from Triple-A Columbus on Wednesday, optioning outfielder Kevin Reese back to the Minors.

Torre told reporters on Wednesday that with Tom Gordon unavailable following his two-inning outing on Tuesday, the club felt it needed another arm in the bullpen.

"Using up Gordon last night the way we did," the manager said, "we felt it wasn't going to hurt us to have a little more support."

Anderson is 4-1 with a 2.85 ERA in 35 relief appearances for Columbus this season, striking out 42 in 47 1/3 innings. Torre hinted that Anderson's stint with the team may be a short one, as the Yanks are leaning toward adding infielder Felix Escalona to the roster later in the week.

Good news for the Yanks... just as we put Heredia on the "permanent DL" in the first month of the season.

Any word on who replaces these two in the bullpen?

The Yankees will fill their roster spots by recalling Bubba Crosby amd purchasing the contract of left-hander Wayne Franklin from the Clippers.
