which way to go, career-wise...
Hoping I can get some advice here about my dilemma. I recently (last month) finished up a masters degree in a field that I love but jobs are VERY scarce unless one wants to move out of state, which we dont and cant. I am currently a SAHM and really would like a part time job to supplement our income. I really dont want to apply for jobs outside of my field because I am scared that if I take a job outside of my field, I will never be able to get back in (hirings in the field depend heavily on recent experience and who you know). Back when I started my degree, there were lots of part time opportunities which is why I thought it would be great for when I had children. Now those part time opportunities have dried up completely. I just dont want my degree to go to waste should I take a job out of my field. I know its a sign of the times and lots of people are struggling but I am just so hesitant to take somethign outside of my field for fear of never getting back in. My one thought is to continue being a SAHM but go to conferences (expensive) and attend association meetings to keep up my skills and connections and then look for a job when the economy improves but a. we need some extra money now and b. DH would never understand the need for this. I'm so afraid though that if I dont start using this degree now, I never will. kind of rambling here but any ideas or anyone want to talk some sense into me? TIA!
ETA: what prompted this is that I just got a call to interview for a job that I did years prior to getting my degree..it is a full time position and the pay is pretty low but I am fully qualified for it. But I dont even know if I would break even with childcare and commuting costs.

If you can hold out for what you are looking for, you should wait. It will be hard for you to get out of that position if you go back

I wondered that too.
I know that networking is the way to go in terms of employment, but personally, I would never pay to go expensive conferences on the whim I may meet someone who can possibly help me find a job.
I don't do that now and I am employed in my field.
I see your concern about not being able to find something in your desired field if you choose to do something else, but I do know that many people question large gaps in employment. Not saying it's fair or right, but in this economy especially, it can be something weighed against you.
Sorry if that sounds harsh!
ETA: If accepting this job is something that would not financially be wise because of the commute and C/C issue, I would consider looking for something opposite hours of your DH, if only P/T to get out of the house, bring in a little $$$$ and keep yourself looking employable on your resume.
