Question about adoption for Dodger...

DH and I are having an impossible time finding Dodger a home. We've had several leads, and they all fall through.

We found this place: Godot Animal Sanctuary

DH called and spoke to the woman, who is very, very nice. Here are the details:

-He would go to the vet once a month.
-He would have human interaction every day.
-He would be primarily outside, but they have kennels for bad weather and such.
-We could visit him. It's about 6 hours away in PA.
-We would sign a contract allowing us to be notified if he were very sick. When he eventually passes, we could have his ashes sent to us or have him buried at their pet cemetery.
-Someone would come, pick him up, and bring him to Godot.
-This is his forever home. He would never be adopted out, put down, etc.
-They would be able to send us pictures of him.

We would have to spend $3,000 for all of this to cover some of his bills. We have already spent over $1,000 trying to make this situation work. We really do not have this extra money sitting around.

We also only have a couple of days to make a decision here because she said there are only two spots for dogs his size and that people call every day.

Does anyone have any input? We are so drained; we can't even think straight.

Jen this sounds great. But I would want to go see it first. Their website looks wonderful and I am sure that it's all good but do some research first. Make sure that they were never under investigation for anything and go see the place for yourselves.

Good luck!

Hmmm....I dont think this sounds ok honestly. To me it's a last resort and honestly it takes people months to find dogs a good real home> to me, going to this place is saying that this is it, this is his forever home and he will never have a real home with a family. I am sorry to say that I think this is a bad bad idea. I think it sounds very sad and I would personally never be able to live with myself if I sent an animal to live outside without a family for the rest of his life. Just being honest.Chat Icon

I know it's tough for you in your situation but I am just being honest.

In addition, I would be concerned this is some sort of "ok" hoarding....

Re: Question about adoption for Dodger...

I think it's sounds great except for the part where is would be outside most of the time. That doesn't sit well with me at all and would be a big issue for me. Just my honest opinion.

I agree 100%. It may take a while to find the perfect forever home for Dodger but the reward of knowing that he is in a loving home will make this time so worth it. This situation doesn't seem like a perfect fit for Dodger. I'm sure that you've probably reached out to rescue groups but try again......keep calling them, offer a donation (if you can) or if they have no room for him, see if while you are "fostering" this dog, they could advertise him for you or see if you could bring Dodger to their adoption events. Best of luck!

I 100% agree. This should be a last resort.

Re: Question about adoption for Dodger...

I don't think I would be able to send him somewhere where he would be outside all the time. The weather in pa is almost the same as here...would you be ok with him being outside right now? Or when it's 95 degrees in the summer? I know they have shelter but I doubt it's climate controlled...

am I the only one who thinks it nuts for you to spend 3,000 to board this dog, so to speak, for the rest of his life?

you simply did a good deed by first taking this dog in and finding his owner.

this is too much, I think...way to much to ask of you, financially.

i hope something works out. I'm sorry

Re: Question about adoption for Dodger...

you'd be better off contacting a rescue here in NY, or Farm Sanctuary to see if they can help or offer an opinion. I wish I had a farm, I would take them all Chat Icon

Re: Question about adoption for Dodger...

This doesn't sit easy with me. As someone else mentioned, it would leave him outside and without a family for the rest of his life.

I think dogs NEED a family and people to love him and interact with them daily.

It has been a week or two since you decided that you couldn't keep Dodger. I think you need to give it more time to find a good home for him.

Definately look into rescue groups allowing you to put pictures up of him on their websites as if you were his "foster" home....

Has the situation between him and the cats changed at all? Have any of them "let up" so to speak?

Not only that but I dont buy the "will se a vet every month" line. I just don't. Most animals just get a check up once a year, I find this extremely hard to believe.

This. I am also wondering about the cats. Animals will usually adjust to each other given enough time. They may not love each other, but will tolerate each other. GL.

I will be honest, 4K is a lot of money to spend on a dog you're not going to keep. I agree with PP, I think dogs need people...they need a family...they need a warm bed and a warm lap. I understand the position you're in. This is why many people look the other way when they see stray animals. I applaud all the time and energy you are putting into this rescued doggie. However, if I was going to spend 3K on Dodger, I would invest it in a crate and a trainer. At least it could be a workable solution until and if you find a good forever home for him.

On an aside, the trainer likely can help you with regard to his destructive side. It sounds like he is high energy and could probably benefit from some obedience lessons and lots of walks.

Re: Question about adoption for Dodger...

I really would not do this.

My family had an issue with a pet that was adopted a few years ago, had a behavioral specialist come in and they discussed the option of sending them to live at an animal sanctuary... it was presented very much as a last resort kind of idea, and seemed to be more geared toward animals that were "unadoptable" and would be given a place to peacefully live out their days but in no way would it be like being part of a loving family.

I really would implore you to gear your efforts towards working with an animal rescue or even a no-kill shelter before doing this. I have been following your story with Dodger and I think you are just getting overwhelmed and need to give it more time before resorting to something like this. Talk to animal rescues, etc. and just in general give it more time. It may sound like a good idea but it's not the same as being part of a family... which I think based on the dog's history and behavior (knowing commands and everything) he was a part of at one point or another and probably misses that feeling a lot.

ETA: I also don't like the idea of him living mostly outside in a kennel, particularly in harsh weather but really in any weather.

Just from my experience - it took months (i'd say at least 6 months) before I would trust my very sweet, amazing older dogs with my cats... but in the end, they do come around - and if not 'love' eachother, learn to tolerate each other.
I always had a 'safe room' where the dogs couldn't go (gated) and where the cats could jump and go. It was tough for us all, but in the end worth it.
Just saying that as maybe given a bit more time, things may settle down?? Chat Icon

I understand it's a tough situation, but I I am in agreement with most of the posters, this wouldn't sit well with me. The vet once a month? Doesn't seem realistic to me (and I'd think cost prohibitive). I am also not a fan of boarding any dogs outside?

If this is your 'last resort' decision, I would definitely agree with visiting them (and w/o notice so they aren't on their 'best' behavior) to see what it is really like.

Re: Question about adoption for Dodger...

I feel that if you are actually considering spending $3,000 for this place, you can spend A LOT less on a Dog Trainer who can help you.

P.S. I wouldn't send him there. Even for free. When something sounds too good to be true, it usually is. No dog see's a vet once a month. They are sugar coating the truth.

No advise. But I think this is a very good point.
