Invasive Ductal Carcinoma
My mom had a biopsy done last week and found out yesterday she has cancer. She has an appointment next Wednesday with a Dr. Edna Kapenhas Valdes (if anyone has heard of her) I don't know anything about breast cancer, can you ladies please inform me on what to expect or how this whole process should go.

Re: Invasive Ductal Carcinoma
I'm 34 and found out in July that I had breast cancer. Stage 1, BRCA negative, ER/PR positive, HER2 negative. I went the radical surgery route and had a double mastectomy with immediate DIEP reconstruction. They reconstruct your breasts from belly fat. I'm actually at the chemo center now getting my 4th and final treatment.
She will need to see a breast surgeon about removing the mass and what kind of surgery she wants to do. She will probably have to go for some scans as well to see if there is anything else.
Sometime you need to do chemo before the surgery to shrink the mass. If she gets a lumpectomy she will probably have to get radiation, I did not since I had the mastectomy.
You can call the American Cancer Society and they will set you up with a patient advocate who will help guide you through the process. Hang in there!

My mom had the same type of cancer in 2005 and choice to have a double mastecetomy with reconstruction. She did not go through radiation or chemo. Good luck to you and hang in there!

Re: Invasive Ductal Carcinoma
Bless you and I hope you are doing well!
But, may I ask why you chose do go with a double mastectomy rather than a lumpectomy considering that your cancer was stage 1?
I ask because I was just diagnosed with an Invasive Ductal Carcinoma - apparently 75% of breast cancers are this one - and my surgeon is recommending a lumpectomy. I am going to another surgeon for a second opinion. I am trying to learn as much as possible as quickly as possible.
Thanks.
