My breech baby, JORDAN 8.26.11 via scheduled C-section

My Birth Story – Jordan 8.26.11

DH and I weren’t exactly “planning” on getting PG so soon into our marriage, but after 3 months of wedded bliss there we were. On Christmas Eve I was at work, talking about how animals “know” things – like the cat at that nursing home who stayed with residents right before they died. I mentioned how I had a dream my belly was purring. A coworker suggested my cat was trying to tell me I was pregnant. I took a test and it was negative. For the rest of the week I kept having cramps like I was getting my period, but nothing. Finally, on New Years Eve I told DH that I should take a test since my period was about 5 days late. He said, “You’re pregnant. I knew it since Tuesday.” Low and behold, there were those two lines on my pee stick (it turns out I took the first test too soon before my missed period).

Right from the get-go DH and I knew we were team green! We never wanted to know our baby’s sex. We loved not knowing, although most people said I was carrying like I was having a boy.

My whole pregnancy was pretty good, with no complications. Heartburn began from day one, as I was always prone to it to begin with. By the end of my pregnancy even my Protonix wasn’t working anymore! No MS first trimester, just exhaustion and some mild nausea in the evening. Second trimester was a breeze. At 20 weeks my LO was head down, and in position ready to go. By the third trimester I was beginning to get tired again. And uncomfortable from getting so big! I began to swell at 32 weeks, and off came the wedding rings. Also at 32 weeks I found out that the lump I felt in my ribcage was a head – my baby was breech. And boy did that little head start to hurt! And feet in the vaj we’re quite uncomfortable to say the least. I was told there’s still time for the baby to turn. At 36 weeks my OBGYN, Dr. Wagner, suggested I go to acupuncture to help the baby turn. It didn’t work. My OBGYN scheduled my C-section for 39 weeks – August 26, 2011. I was so upset having to “schedule” my baby’s birthday. I always felt the child should come out when it was good and ready. But staying team green the whole time kept me positive. At least I had that to look forward to!

I got to the Huntington Hospital at 10:30. Admitted, IV started, hurry up and wait. Our parents arrived around 12. And at about 1 o’clock the anesthesiologist came to see me. It was almost time. I was so nervous, I could cry. Dr. Wagner popped in to let me know it was time to rock and roll.

I was walked into the OR and sat on the side of the operating table to get my spinal. I started crying and held onto my L&D nurse for dear life. Honestly, it wasn’t that bad! As soon as the spinal was in my legs were up on the table, I was draped and prepped. First my toes felt warm and fuzzy, and in seconds flat my whole lower body felt that way, right up to my lungs! DH came into the room within 5 minutes. Then they started. Then I started getting really nervous and tearful. I focused on breathing to get me through. Within 5 minutes after that we heard, “Looks like a boy… Yup, it’s a boy!” DH and I looked at each other and started to cry! I couldn’t believe it. Jordan was born at 1:57pm, Friday, August 26, 2011. He was 8 lbs and 20.5 inches. He had a full head of dark brown hair and big blue eyes. Obviously we were in love. As all of this was happening I started to get an awful headache, I was told from being pumped full of fluids and laying flat, not the spinal (due to the timing of when it hit). I could barely concentrate on my beautiful son. I wanted them to close me up and get me out of there so I could sit up and hold him. They were pretty fast. DH got to hold him after they wiped him off and we had our first “family picture” taken by the anesthesiologist. Once they were pretty much done DH and DS went off to the nursery and I was off to recovery.

While in recovery I was given ice chips and waited. Finally after 20-30 minutes DH came in with his mother. Apparently my mother went to get fruit for me since I was obsessing over it prior to delivery. Another 20 minutes go by and they brought me DS!!! He was absolutely perfect. The nurse had him latch on to me and he nursed for 20 minutes. I was in heaven. Once he was done I was brought to my room.

I had a private room (benefit of working where you deliver!) – the best thing ever! I was transferred over to my bed and settled in. I got DS in my arms again – this was the first time I felt like I really got to look at him! All of his fingers and toes, and HAIR! Then everyone could come in. Honestly, that whole day was a blur. I know they gave me a shot of Demerol in my butt for pain, which I though was a bit excessive and after that I specifically requested 1-2 oxycodone, no shots (I was also on scheduled ibuprofen 600mg every 6 hours)! I still had my foley in. And once my mom got back with my fruit I only ate that for the night. Once everyone left for the night DS was taken back to the nursery at 10:30 (my choice, and I did this every night). I was washed up by a nursing assisitant (still no feeling in my legs, just a little in my feet). DS was brought to me to nurse at 2 and 5. I was washed up again around 6 and could feel my legs again!

At 8am my foley was pulled, and by 9:30 I was up to the bathroom. I was definitely sore, but it was do-able. DH came at around 11 and visiting hours started at 1. Ugh, everyone came between 1-2, it was so annoying. Just too much. Oh, and everyone came that day because 1) it was Saturday, 2) Hurricane Irene was going to hit that night into Sunday. Everyone was gone by 5 though, and I had dinner and spent the evening with DH and DS. DH left around 8 to go home and make sure everything was secure for Irene. Also, the hospital was crazy busy that day because we were getting patients from Southside, since they were being evacuated. I didn’t notice though – just give me my pain meds and leave me alone. I was a pretty easy patient! Our electricity went out at 4:30 and we went on generator. Then at 7:30 it went out again, except this time we were only on emergency back-up generator, meaning only about ¼ of the electricity worked. Just my bed and the light in the hallway area of my room. No call bell, no TV, no internet. But my phone worked. Even the water filter and refrigerator were dead. DH came in the afternoon and in the early evening my Dad and 2 little brothers came (they had no electricity and nothing to do). Finally on Monday the power came back on at about 4am. More visitors… And then on Tuesday we got to go home!

Everyday I felt more and more mobile, but was still taking my pain medication every 3 hours.

Nursing went OK-ish. I just didn’t put out much colostrum for him and he got dehydrated. It was a little frustrating, especially since it’s hard enough to nurse a sleepy newborn. But then my milk came in on Monday-Tuesday. He was doing fine when we left the hospital and his weight was 7 lbs 4 oz.

His weight after, ugh, that’s a whole ‘nother story --- severe reflux is a b!tch!!! And now he’s 6 ½ weeks… On super-thickened formula and Axid, but a great weight once again!!!

I never knew I could love someone so much!!! He is my obsession, my perfect little boy. And wow, is he one cute kid!

Everyone at Huntington was awesome. It was a pleasure to be the one being taken care of there for once! I can only comment on my private room, which was the best ever. I kept my door shut at all times. I was in my own perfect little baby world. I still am! LOL

I think that’s pretty much it, hope I didn’t forget anything.
