I have evidence of e-mail hacking at work - do I tell?

Long story short, yesterday at work, there was a small incident between a co-worker and the 3 interns I supervise. The co-worker was nasty to them while I was in the room, and we all felt greatly disrespected. There was an issue with a procedure within the office, and we all made references to an e-mail that had been sent out a few weeks ago. Shortly after the co-worker left my office, we all received an e-mail from another co-workers account - WHO WAS NOT EVEN IN THE OFFICE - with a clarification pointing out that we were all wrong. So now I know that it was this person using the other person's e-mail, which is wrong on so many levels. My boss called myself and the interns into her office shortly after the e-mail was sent out, but we had all forgotten to mention it. She tried to clear up the situation and make peace with us.

I should also mention that my boss and this co-worker are very close and friendly outside of work, which makes things difficult. So do I tattle on her and go to my boss? One of my interns was almost going to respond to the e-mail so that this other person would find out about the hacking, but I advised her not to, so as not to stir the pot. Help!

How crazy someone would risk their job like that! I would absolutely respond the "e-mailer" and question their clarification, etc. Until I verified that the e-mail did NOT come from them, I wouldn't do anything.

If the person says I did not send this e-mail, then present it to your boss. I don't know if I would accuse the bosses friend-but I might mention the events that happened right before the e-mail was sent. Good luck.

What evidence do you have other than the email itself? Do employees have the privilege of accessing their work email accounts from home? Can you confirm that the person who's account was "hacked" really did not send the email from maybe outside the office?

I would definitely wait until you have solid proof, and I would mention it directly to your manager/boss because if your co worker did hack into another email account, that can be grounds for disciplinary action or even termination.

I would just be really non political about it. I'd forward the email to your boss, questioning its validity without pointing a finger at anyone in particular

I would respond to the person, when I know she's not at the computer. Then I'd cc: my boss & let the chips fall where they may.

I would simply reply "thanks for the clarification" and let it go.

If she didn't send the email and is unaware of it, this will alert her. It's her issue to deal with, not yours. She very well may have authorized the 1st person to send it from her account. She may have been called and sent it from offsite.

Just to update:

Apparently one of my interns took it upon herself to reply to the message. The person whose e-mail it was sent from had no idea what it was about, which proved that it was not her. After hearing that, I went to my boss, who was in shock, but then told me that these 2 employees sort of share an account, and she said that the person who sent it probably didn't realize whose name she was under. Sounded good and legit.

However, the other person told me that their accounts, while together, do have passwords on them, so it still means that the original person was using the other person's e-mail account without permission.

I did my part, so now it's up to my co-worker if she wants to press this further. Thanks for your suggestions.
