Re: extremely loud and incredibly close..
I teach it to my sophomores... it tends to be most of their favorite book every year (and it's one of mine, too.) It definitely takes some time to sink into, though, I think. (At least that was my experience with it.) It's just so intense.

I just finished this and I have to say, I was disappointed. Took me a while to get into it, and I figured at that point I might as well finish it! But then ending fell flat in my opinion!

Re: extremely loud and incredibly close..
OK, I finished last night and was pretty much bawling the whole last quarter of the book. Good thing DH wasn't home--the catharsis wouldn't have been exactly the same. Just my kind of book!!!

It was just ok - but I did rush through it - skipped some pages because I was bored but I am not sure if I would recommend it as a must read.

I LOVED it. I loved all of the postmodern touches too, like the photos. The WTC photo was so powerful. I felt like it all really put you inside his head and inside his experience more than any other book I've read.
I'm honestly not sure it's the same experience on the Kindle.

Re: extremely loud and incredibly close..
i have a nook..all the pictures were there
just not a fan..i felt like the author was doing too much..between 9/11, deceased parents, learning disabilities, parents starting to date again, the dresden connection, the inability to speak
i just felt like it was too all over the place-if the author would have focused on a few aspects and developed the plot in a less contrite way i think i would have enjoyed it more

Re: extremely loud and incredibly close..
I know the pictures are there, but I felt like te pictures being in book form, like a flip book, and the act of turning pages was part of the experience somehow.
As i said, i loved it, but I love Jonathan Safran Foer. if he wrote a phone book, I would probably read it

I liked it and I actually like the Dresden connection - just kind of shows how horror keeps repeating itself even if it's in different forms

Re: extremely loud and incredibly close..
Didn't LOVE it. But liked it. I found the author's style of writing difficult to read which impacted my view of the book as a whole. I kept getting lost in the conversations. It was hard for me to keep track of who was talking to who and so on.
I did, however, looooooove the movie.
