BTDT - Delaying kindergarten for late birthdays

My twin boys have a 10/29 birthday. Although my instinct is to hold them back because they have speech and ot delays, I really want to send them to kindergarten.

Anyone regret sending their children to kindergarten when they were eligible with a late birthday?

Re: BTDT - Delaying kindergarten for late birthdays

My son has an 11/29 birthday. I was going to hold him back because he had a language delay, and although he had caught up, he was still very immature.

I found out though that if he did need services, that if I held him back, he would not be able to get them.

He had to go through the kindergarten screening regardless, we did that, and he did okay. They offered him summer school to catch him up and he went and loved it. Part of the day was camp, they went to the beach and pool every other day.

Now it's January and he's doing well. He's still a little immature, and he loves to test the limits, but overall he's good.

I don't regret sending him. He loves school. I miss him a lot during the day though.

If your twins are currently reciviening services you must enroll them in K and they must attend otherwise you will not get services through the school district and you will be paying out of pocket.

Just seem information to consider if you plan to hold them back

Re: BTDT - Delaying kindergarten for late birthdays

My DS's birthday is 11/4, and he has Asperger's. He was already receiving services, and as the PP's have said, he needed to be enrolled in kindergarten in order to continue services. However, we felt he was more than ready for school academically, so we were okay with sending him. He does struggle with the social skills and is more immature than some of the other kids, but I feel this would have been an issue even if we held him back a year.

He's doing really well in kindergarten, and he absolutely loves it. I'm so glad I sent him...I think it was the right decision. HTH!

I know alot of people who send their children to private kindergarten (like catholic school) and then re-enroll their children the following year in the public school. Just a suggestion.

I held my son back from kindergarten when it was time (he has a mid November birthday) because I knew that he wasn't ready socially and he needed the extra year to mature in many ways. It was the best thing that I ever did!

I sent him to preschool out of pocket (building blocks in commack) and he learned and matured so much in that extra year! The school district tried to force me to send him to kindergarten, told me he wouldn't continue to receive o.t. and p.t., etc but I did what I knew deep down inside was right. Guess what?, they still paid for the o.t. and p.t. I just had to pay for the extra year of preschool.

I know that every child is different, but for my son it was the very best decision to hold him back. I just wanted to let you know that you should do what you feel is right, don't let anyone make you feel pressured to do something that they feel you should. No one knows your child better than you!

Thank you everyone for your responses. When I asked about the services even if I didn't send them they are the school districts responsibilty and if they qualify they would still get services. I am still torn but hopefully I will do the right thing.

I just wanted to addttyst you should till register them for kindergarten. You don't have to make a decision until the time comes. And they can grow and mature so much from now until September.

are you in the state of NY.. i ask, because i just went to 3 different transition meetings from CPSE to CSE and they all said the same thing...

kindergarten is NOT mandatory, but in order to continue to receive services you MUST enroll your child in Kindergarten and they MUST attend, because they will NOT get services if the child does NOT attend school.

if you heard different i would love to know which district told you so.

My daughters bday is 11/19....cutoff is 12/1. I did not hold her back and she is consistently at the "head of her class" according to her teachers.

I was also a late bday (11/23) and was in half-accelerated classes in MS and HS.

I never thought about holding her back for a second!

The director of special education in my district told me at the last cpse meeting I went to last week. She did make it clear that at school age level it could be hard to get OT services and if they were approved for speech I would have to bring them to the elementry school for the therapy.

that is very interesting, thank you for letting me know because i have been told by our SD (my DS is ASD) that when he is NOT in school he will NOT get services.

if you don't mind me asking again, what district... you can FM me, because i would like to bring it up to my schools principal, because delayed K was asked during the transition meetings.

thanks

DS's birthday is 11/27 and my districts cutoff is 12/1. We decided not to hold him back and he started kindergarten in September. He receives extra services just because he is the youngest in his class. So far so good. I am glad that we didn't hold him back.

We are dealing with this now. I planned on holding my son back because of his birthday. He is receiving services for OT this school year and they told me today that if I do not enroll him in kindergaten he won't get any services next year. My question is does that mean he won't get services just for the extra year I pay for preschool or does that mean he will not get any services forever?? I am so confused why they do this. They are telling me he will get the extra help he needs in kindergarten, but I have 2 older children and my youngest is no where near ready to go. If anyone knows more info please let me know! TIA

we just went through this last year. We were told there was no way DD would get services if I did not send her to kindergarten. I also wanted to hold her back one more year (her bday is in October). We own houses in two school districts on LI and both told us the same thing. Not attending kindergarten means no services. DD is in kindergarten now and honestly I'm glad I sent her but I am holding her back this year to repeat kindergarten again.

Now the only way I have heard of people getting around not sending thier DC to kindergarten was if they declined services from the SD and paid out of pocket themselves for the year. Services then resumed with the school district when they entered school. This was just for speech though.

Re: BTDT - Delaying kindergarten for late birthdays

The SD I work for will provide a student with only related services (OT, PT, ST) If a parent chooses to hold the child back a year in Pre-K. The parent brings the child to the kindergarten building and they receive the services there. That is ONLY if the student receives related services. If the student needs educational services they must go to kindergarten.

How I understand it is that your son must enter Kindergarten as a child under CSE (special education at the school age level). Do not let them discharge him at your meeting in June if you can avoid it. It is very difficult to get them back in to Special Education at the school age level. Again I am not an educator but I have been asking questions.

Re: BTDT - Delaying kindergarten for late birthdays

Ds has a late birthday and a slight language delay. He is starting kindergarten on time. I feel like worst case scenario, he gets left back in kindy. I really don't want to have him in preschool for an extra year ( and pay for it).

I just wonder why hold back if they are within the cutoff?

I feel like its best to get them used to the school setting in K, if they have to repeat k, it's not the worst thing right?

Someone please enlighten me ! I feel like I'm the only one with this thought process. My bday is end of December so maybe that's why I feel like this.

Thank you for the info! This whole process has been crazy. They are testing him right now to see if he will get summer services, which would be great. I still don't know what I am doing for September. My husband does not want him going to kindergaten and he does not want him classified(he is very old school). I on the other hand want him to get the help he needs. Not only is he getting OT, but his behavior is definitely an issue. They have been working with him to teach him better ways to communicate with his words, playing nicely with the other children, sharing, etc. The one on one time compared with his regular class has been wonderful. He is improving everyday. Hopefully I will be able to continue with some services even if it means bringing him to the elementary school just for the service.

Re: BTDT - Delaying kindergarten for late birthdays

I'm not in your situation, but I can say that to this day my mom regrets not holding my brother back when he was entering K. He didn't have a problem when he was younger, but the difference in maturity was big when he got older - middle school and HS. Most of his friends had early birthdays and it was a struggle for him to keep up with them emotionally.

His birthday is 10/9. At the time, my mom spoke with his preschool teachers as well as the school psychologist and his ped and they all agreed that he was ready to go. Her gut was to hold him back and she still regrets not doing so. There was no reason to hold him back because there were no academic reasons to do so.

Go with your gut Chat Icon

ETA: She said that she thinks it was also because he is a boy and that if he was a girl that he wouldn't have had the same issues.
