Advice Needed

After being laid-off last year, I started working with a start-up in July. The position title was a step-up and the pay is crazy good for my field (which should have been my first clue).

It is very apparent that things are going downhill rapidly and I know there is absolutely no future in this place so I've already started up my job search again.

Last week, I received a disturbing directive from my bosses (in writing) which puts me in a very, very comprising position. I don't know if it's illegal per se, but it's certainly unethical and could have permanent negative reprucussions on my career as a whole.

I'm actually praying that they end letting me go over the fact that I blatantly refused to do what they wanted me to. But if they don't, do I have any options as far as quitting and collecting unemployment?

I just want to end my involvement with this place as soon as humanly possible.

Re: Advice Needed

I think they have to let you go for you to qualify for unemployment. I think if you leave, no matter what the circumstances, you do not qualify.

Re: Advice Needed

I was on UE for a while after my temporary position ended.

It's possible to file even if you quit. However, I am pretty sure you will be asked to provide an explanation, and your employer will have a chance to state their case.

An examiner will then look at your claim and make a decision.

I am sure the circumstances have to be pretty severe for that to fly, but you never know. Unfortunately, if you are denied, you won't know that until it's too late.

Document everything that is going on just in case. And start looking for another job.

Good luck.

Re: Advice Needed

I don't know how this would work in terms of UE but definitely keep copies of the unethical crap they are asking you to do.

They can always deny if they verbally tell you to do something that is wrong, but if they put it on paper they are just asking for a lawsuit or at the very least, UE IMO.

Maybe post this and ask HR people how this works though.

Re: Advice Needed

You'd have to define "something wrong".

No employer can ask an employee to do anything illegal.

If you were let go, you would be entitled to unemployment. They could challenge you but probably would not win.
