@#$%^ insurance companies..

I've been taking the exact same insulin for about 27 years..... Now, all of a sudden, Cigna tells me they aren't covering the brand I've used my entire life. I have to use a different brand.

It's OK, because the FDA says they are the same.... but make sure you are monitored closely by your doctor, and do a lot more tests during the transition.... Chat Icon

I can't afford not to switch, but I'm not happy about it.....

I understand. Sometimes it feels like they don't have the patient in mind.

I think your doctor can dispute it and say you need to be covered by X brand for X reason. Worth a shot.

Insurance company already stated that I can still get the old brand, but they won't cover it at all... They were pretty explicit in the letter. It's not a generic vs name brand issue. It's brand X vs brand Y that they consider equal (with close observation from your doctor during this "seamless" transition).

I'm not worried about any serious effects, it's more of a vent about having to switch after 27 years because Cigna apparently made some deal with the other company for a discount.

Re: @#$%^ insurance companies..

my insurace company decided that wouldn't cover lantus

I had a terrible reaction to the other brand- I forgot the name- humolog?
novolog- forgive me I am only diabetic for 9 months

but my doctor and pharmaist went to bat for me and they agreed to cover it

it's worth a shot- no pun intended

Re: @#$%^ insurance companies..

I'm going from Humulin and Humalog to Novalin and Novalog. The FDA and American Diabetes Association say they are the same, so I'm thinking I need a pretty good reason to force them to cover it.
I've never had any reaction to any medication in my life, and I've even bought a different brand from Walmart when I was needed something real quick and couldn't get a prescription renewal in time.
It's more of an annoying vent than a real medical issue at this point, so it's definitely not worth fighting for.

Wow - as a type 1 diabetic for 28 years, this would really annoy me. I take Novolog and I would not be happy if I had to switch. I am sure your doctor will guide you through it. Over the 28 years, I have switched from using Regular and NPH to lantus to Humalog to Novolog, so the change can be made, it is just the fact that they are making it for you, not based on any medical reason.

I've switched from R to Humalog, which is a bigger change than Humalog to Novalog, but that change was at my and my doctor's say, because we both agreed that it was a better option for me.

I just get annoyed when pencil-pushers in an office somewhere in another state get to make medical decisions for me, and my doctor and I have essentially no say in it.
