Opinions needed--surgery in a preschooler

So my 4 year old DS is scheduled for surgery next month for a hernia (not an emergency but needs to be done). He also has asthma and has been sick a TON this winter. Would you pull him out of preschool the whole week before? He only goes 3 mornings a week. I feel like perhaps I am being over cautious, but I am pregnant and due in April so if it gets cancelled due to illness we may not be able to reschedule for a while with the craziness of a new baby.

I would - if you can't reschedule and it needs to be that week missing a few days in a 4 year program isn't a big deal. I would maybe plan some fun activities to do at home that you wouldn't normally do so that your DC doesn't get bored. I might feel differently if could easily be rescheduled but if it must be that week and you don't want to chance it I would keep my DC home.

Maybe a bike ride to get out of the house, playing in the back, baking, some fun arts and crafts, some new movies and you can have a picnic and watch the movies together for some alone time.

You can also explain the situation to his teachers and find out what they'll be covering that week- most classes have a theme for each week. And try to get some books from the library on topic and try to do a project per day that would tie in the theme of the week.

Re: Opinions needed--surgery in a preschooler

Absolutely i would. Last spring ds was scheduled for surgery (late april) morning of his allergies woke up (pollen related) get to the hosp hes prepped for surgery and last minute it was decided it was too risky to put him under...had to wait an entire month before we could try again. Any signs of a cold cough etc could cause a complication. keep him home n play it safe
