c-section: when could you first BF in hospital?

This is obviously a question for those that didn't have complications. (Meaning a regular c-section where mommy and baby were both fine.)

Is there any chance to BF immediately? I am hoping for a VBAC, but just wondering if I have another c-section.

TIA!!!

Yes I breastfed as soon as they finished stiching me up and took me into the recovery room. I nursed dd for almost on a hour on and off.

Just had my 3rd and had to have him by emergency c/s. all was fine with me and baby and he was ready and waiting for me to nurse as soon as I was wheeled into recovery.

Re: c-section: when could you first BF in hospital?

I nursed in the recovery room for both kids. DS was technically an emergency c/s since my water broke before the scheduled c/s. He was a footling frank breech birth. DD was a scheduled repeat c/s as she was transverse breech. DH had to bring each child in the basinet to recovery. The hospital told us on the tour that there is no nurse who can do that for you because they don't have the staff available to move the babies like that.

Re: c-section: when could you first BF in hospital?

I did not nurse right away. I had DD at 8 pm and I fell into a deep sleep while in recovery. I didn't see DD until I was wheeled into my room at 12 am. This is one thing about my expierience I am sad about. I hope next time I have a baby I'll be able to nurse right away.

Re: c-section: when could you first BF in hospital?

I had a fever so I didn't see my baby for a few hours. I was so drugged up I could barely function the entire day. I don't even remember when I first bf. not sure if this is typical though.

Re: c-section: when could you first BF in hospital?

I could BF as soon as I went into the recovery room, but I started to feel nauseous when the nurse helped me sit up. I ended up not BFing until a few hours later.

I was holding DS as they wheeled me into recovery and I BF him as soon as we got in there. It was only for about 10-15min though, bc I started to feel very nauseous and was vomitting for the rest of the day from the meds.

I had an emergency c-section and had a bad reaction to the anaesthesia so I didn't nurse DD until I got to my bed. She had no problem latching on or nursing right away.

Re: c-section: when could you first BF in hospital?

I nursed DS right in recovery as soon I got there. He actually travelled with me on the bed.
DD was rushed to NICU and didn't get to nurse her until many hours later.

Very excited for you!

Re: c-section: when could you first BF in hospital?

As I was wheeled into recovery the nurse was picking him up to put him into my armsChat Icon The people were not 2 inches from my bed walking away and he was handed to me and latched on. He nursed the entire time we were in post op and our nurse was amazing! She was very pro breastfeeding and offered some great advice! LOVED her so much we wrote a letter to the hospital about her and sent her flowers after we were released.

As soon as my baby was cleaned up, she was given to me and I fed her, maybe 10 minutes after she was born.

Re: c-section: when could you first BF in hospital?

I had GD with both pregnancies. Both 'required' my babies to be in NICU for observation.

With my DS (4.5 years ago) - Long Island Jewish ---He was born & they wrapped him up and then showed me him (all I saw were his eyes). He went straight to NICU about 2 minutes after I saw him, then was released to regular nursery and I didn't see him for 6 or so hours. The nurses gave me him and left. I was in an awkward position in excrutiating pain trying to manage him & all my IV lines. I had to call them to take him away because I couldn't physically do anything.

With my DD, this past summer -- North Shore Manhasset --- I repeated over and over again I wanted to breast feed her ASAP. I wasn't allowed while in the operating room (not sanitary). They didn't take her away at all though - she stayed in my DH's arms while I was stitched up. She then rode on my chest to recovery where I breastfed her for an hour. Only then, about 2 hours after she was born, did she go to regular nursery for about 4 hours. She came back to me in recovery (I was there 12 hours waiting for a room) where the nurses helped me get into a chair and they helped me breastfeed her. Such a better experience.

Be vocal. Sometimes new mothers, like myself 4 years ago, just let things happen around them --- use your voice Chat Icon Use your voice to EVERYONE you come across and demand what you want.

The minute they handed him to me I put him to the boob. I had to wait four hours due to gestational diabetes to hold him. His sugar levels were off and he was jaundiced.
