Stomach virus and dehydration
I am 14 weeks and have been suffering from this stomach virus since Tuesday. I can't keep anything in (sorry TMI). I spoke to my OB yesterday and she said to just try and stay hydrated. I am drinking water nonstop but am still paranoid about being dehydrated. What are the signs and when should I worry? I don't want to keep calling the doctor but am really worried about harming the baby

Re: Stomach virus and dehydration
I had SUCH a problem staying hydrated in my first trimester. I had a stomach virus and was hospitalized for dehydration and from there it was really difficult to get it back. My Dr. said it won't hurt the baby - bc he/she will suck everything they need from you. It will only hurt you - and it could only hurt the baby if you pass out from dehydration. That being said - I'm sure your baby is fine, just try and drink as much as you can! If you're vomiting every time you take a sip of any beverage - that's a key sign for dehydration and should probably be hospitalized at that point just to get in fluids.

Ita ~ just keep drinking ~ everything goes to the baby first then you... just keep drinking! Try to stay hydrated as much as you can ~ I had the stomach virus for 7 days and it was brutal! Hang in there! Feel better!

I would look at the color of your urine. If it is very dark you need more water. If it is light, you are probably fine. I had a stomach virus last week and felt EXHAUSTED from the dehydration until I was able to drink enough fluids.

Re: Stomach virus and dehydration
I had a horrible stomach virus when I was right around 14-15 weeks as well. My OB told me the same thing. Other than water, try to drink some gatorade - do half water half gatorade if the taste of straight gatorade is too strong for you now. At least you'll get some electrolytes with that. Suck on some lolipops if you can just to get a little sugar in you as well. Work you're way up to things like plain toast. I agree though that the staying hydrated is the #1 important thing. Cracked lips, really dark colored urine are some big signs of dehydration. Don't be afraid to be a pain to your OB. If you've been battling this since Tuesday, don't let it continue to the weekend without calling him again. Worst case scenario is that he'll admit you to L&D for IV fluids. Its a a bit of a pain to go but at least you'll know your being monitored and given the fluids you need. You're baby is very well protected in there and will utilize your stored fat for nutrition if you can't keep food down. But staying hydrated is key!

Re: Stomach virus and dehydration
Thank you ladies for your responses. I think it's starting to taper off a little, and I was able to drink a LOT of water today. If it continues through the night, I will call my OB in the morning for advice. I think there should be a rule that pregnant women NEVER get the stomach virus...it's so unfair!
