eating before and after workout

what do you eat before a workout and how long before the workout do you eat it?

do you eat differently if you are running v. weight training?

what do you eat post workout?

I eat oatmeal before my 5 mile run

I don't weight train right now- I am too bulky from training and not doing cardio

and then egg whites and cheese after

Before cardio you should have a small carb and maybe even a little fat---Ex. rice cake with PB

Then some protein for sure after.

Before weight training- Carb/Protein Ex. Oats with protein powder and afterwards carbs/protein but SOON after!

lately after my workouts I've been making a protein shake with unsweetened almond milk and protein powder sometimes with fruit depending on the day.

its the before I've been struggling with

Thats a GREAT Post workout snack!!!

I eat my pre workout snack about 30-40 minutes before.

And thank you! I wouldn't know what to write on a blog! lol

I have a banana and a small cup of oatmeal pre workout. Postwork out I have greek yogurt.
Protein is a must after you work out!!

As are carbs---especially after weights! You braek down the glycogen stores (carbs) in the muscle and you want to refeed them so that they can build!

IMO I don't overdo the carbs. For me protein is enough. Before is fine. Just my opinion.

Got ya...if you're looking to build muscle, I'd add in some carbs and take them away from somewhere else if you are not wanting to have too many. I try to prioritize carbs around workouts...Im on pretty low carbs now but it helps me to do this. Just some food for thought!

I don't know if this is the 'best' way to do it but it works for me schedule-wise because I work out after work:

I have a protein shake when I get home, then I walk the dog for about 25 minutes, feed him, and then work out, and then I have dinner about 20 minutes after working out (which is always protein+carbs). Seems to work for me!

I usually eat a meal before a workout. After 20 minutes, I get on my treadmill and jog for a good hour. I have noticed a difference between eating before and after. Eating before seems to give me more energy. I mostly eat veggies, and protein. Afterwards I usually eat a banana. Try it both ways, and see what works best for you. People recommend eating before, and some after, but it depends on you. Chat Icon
