NICU Mommas.... Did you give gifts on baby's discharge?
DS #2 has been in the NICU for 5 weeks tomorrow and should be coming home in a week or two. I know I will give something. Just not sure what. I've seen parents give cookie trays, girl scout cookies sold in the lobby, gift bags to doctors, there is a lot of artwork hanging with inspiration/thank you messages.
What did you give, if you gave anything? I love to bake and show my appreciation with pretty baked treats but my friend who is a nurse said that nurses do not like homemade things. Just feel like this journey was more than a box of Dunkin Donuts!
I am very much liking the art thing. I've taken many pics of DS (not showing his identity) and can add or mount it with a nice saying. But still want to bring a treat for the nurses lounge. I was thinking of baking cupcakes and/or brownies and buying a veggie platter too. I hear them all talk about diets but they also like the goodies! I would bring a batch for each the day and night shift. Does that sound okay? I would not want my hard made goodies thrown away.
Did you get a special something for the doctor? Favorite nurse? I honestly could not pick a favorite nurse. They are all so great.
Thanks!

That sounds great!! I tried so hard to get my Sh%$ together to do that. I was so overwhelmed by the time both babies came home that I just never did. I also thought of doing a veggie platter. Glad your LO is on their way home!!!!!!

Re: NICU Mommas.... Did you give gifts on baby's discharge?
My youngest was there 4 weeks & we brought them cookies weekly from our family friends bakery. Then in discharge, I got a huge edible arrangement for all of them. They were all so appreciative bc they said with the hussle in the NICU, its nice to grab something healthy as they run around.
We also send them progression pictures every 6 months of DS. They love to see how they've grown

I thought about it but never got around to it. We had so many different nurses. I would say throughout our 39 days there, we only had a handful that we saw more then once. Some were really nice others were just ok.

Re: NICU Mommas.... Did you give gifts on baby's discharge?
We donated a rocking chair to the NICU room (they were always looking for rocking chairs for the parents to rock the babies), but nothing for the nurses. I wouldn't make something--I know the ones in our hospital prefer store/bakery-bought so they kind of know where it came from.

We went to the bakery and bought TONS of pastries for the NICU on the day we took the twins home. They were very appreciative.

We brought a huge cookie platter in on our discharge day and wrote a heartfelt card to the NICU nurses who were amazing.
I wish I did more, but they seemed to be very appreciative.

we were in the NICU for 5.5 months so we brought cookies and goodies on more than one occassion. For DS's discharge day, we brought a large box of godiva chocolates for everyone and then gave cards with gift cards to his primary nurses.

Re: NICU Mommas.... Did you give gifts on baby's discharge?
Congrats on your DS coming home DS was in the NICU for 4 months and we became very close with a lot of the staff so i wanted to do something special. We had a 5lb tray of pastries delivered and my Mom baked cupcakes. We also gave small personal gifts to each of his primary nurses.

Re: NICU Mommas.... Did you give gifts on baby's discharge?
I really wanted to do something, all the nurses were amazing in so many ways. I feel horrible but once the twins came home my life was upside down for awhile and I never got around to doing anything. The closest I came was when I wrote a very heartfelt letter to them all thanking them for everything and mailed it when I mailed them a Christmas card. Im sure anything you send would be appreciated.

Re: NICU Mommas.... Did you give gifts on baby's discharge?
I gave each of their primary nurses a $25 box of Godiva chocolates and handwritten thank you cards.
While we were there, I would bring in flowers for the ladies at the front desk, girl scout cookies for nurses, Russel Stover chocolates for nurses, etc.

My baby was only there two weeks and I had the same experience- always a different nurse. Only one was great-some good-and most just okay-one was horrific that I needed to speak to the manager. I am glad others had a better experience-I am sure they'd appreciate whatever you choose to do. Congrats on your baby!

Re: NICU Mommas.... Did you give gifts on baby's discharge?
I wanted to and never did. They kept telling us they would be there for at least 2 weeks if not more. On the 9th day they said they were coming home the next day, which happened to be the day we were closing on our house. Things were SO hectic and insane I totally forgot. I think it is very nice and I love the art work idea with some type of snacks!

Re: NICU Mommas.... Did you give gifts on baby's discharge?
I keep meaning to send something over there-- DS wasn't there for too long, only for my stay after my emergency C. I was thinking an edible arrangement because they must get so many baked goods and would welcome something healthier.

Re: NICU Mommas.... Did you give gifts on baby's discharge?
While I was in the hospital my dad brought me a small box of cookies and box for the nurses on the maternity floor and the NICU nurses. When the twins were discharged I brought in a big box of nice italian pastries and a card expressing my thanks for all they do.

Re: NICU Mommas.... Did you give gifts on baby's discharge?
I wouldn't do cookies or sandwiches because if your NICU was like mine, there are only 4 nurses on per day and a few doctors/nps. It's best to do something packaged or non-edible so that all the people who cared for your baby could have one. We gave individual jars of honey from our honeybees so everyone got something.
