It was good but IMO missing all of the character & relationship development that the book offers!

Gale was nonexistent, it looked like she was obsessed w rue after 4 seconds.... It just felt rushed to me

I felt the same way. Even no explanation of the mockingjay!

I really thought they did a great job with the movie. Considering it was 2 hours & 2 2minutes long, I'm not sure how much more they could have fit in

Definitely read the book beforehand.

I liked it. I really did think it was very good. As a book lover, I ALWAYS feel like movies are lacking some depth. Maybe they will show the mockingjay thing more in future movies.

They softened Katniss, which worked and didn't work,

I liked the behind the scenes with the gamemakers stuff

I agree with this. There is so much to the book and and although i enjoyed the movie, it was nowhere near the book. I kind of feel it should have been a two-parter-- the first part should have ended with them rising up into the arena. There was not enough time to develop either the relationship with gale or with peeta.

i have to admit, my fave part was when i looked over and saw dh crying when katniss volunteered over prim. (we have two daughters, so i know what he was thinking/feeling.)

I really liked the movie a lot. The only think I think that non-book readers might not 'get' is the importance of the 3 finger salute as a gesture of 'goodbye' to a loved one. It isn't explained in the movie at all.. but having read the book it just made me all weepy when I saw it play out on screen. I thought the casting was pretty perfect.

I thought the movie was good...but I read the books a year ago and LOVED them.. and I def thought they were better. I was sad to see certain things/people left out and changed (Madge and the mockingjay pin, Peeta's dad seeing Katniss before they left, etc - I don't want to say much more for those who want to read the book)... so I was slightly disappointed. I can't say it was bad but it did feel rushed and there wasn't enough character development. Peeta was a huge part of the book but I felt like this whole movie was Katniss Katniss Katniss. What about Peeta? The two of them together is a huge thing in the book. Not to mention her friendship with Gale. Blah. I could go on forever... lol

I want to go see this, but dont want to be sitting in a theatre filled with screaming 13 year olds.

So happy there is a theatre by me that has cinema suites for the 21 & over crowd. It's how I saw breaking dawn and this movie for the midnight premiere. So peaceful!

Where do you live? I am in West Orange. It's the only way i will see a movie now. Especially since I can also have a glad of wine! Chat Icon

I was very disappointed they didn't explain the mockingjay! It was so poignant! And they could've definitely developed relationships and characters a little more. They even introduced the story about her father/mother in a backwards sort of way.

I cried like a baby. I cried just knowing it was coming. I'm really excited to see what they do with the next books!

I was also a little disappointed in the mutts. They were so much more of a mindfck (pardon the expression) in the books. In the movie they were just vicious dogs.

LOVED Woody Harrelson as Haymitch though! He was awesome! They did a good job casting.

TOTALLy agree with this. The mutts were a big deal to me and in the movie, it was a non-issue.

a lot of the meaning behind things was left out, and that was unfortunate, because it wasn't just a good story- it was a meaningful, powerful story. that wasn't portrayed in the movie and i think without reading the books, you wouldn't be touched by the movie.

also loved Woody! he was really perfect.

I saw it and loved it. I thought it was by far one of the best movie/book adaptions ever....that being said it was definitely a movie for someone who read the book. Even though they explain it, so many things lose their meaning if you dont know it already.

But I do get that it is a movie and they cant explain every little detail or it would be 4 hours long. I thought the actors were great I loved Cinna and Haymitch!!!

Totally agree.

The MAJOR point that really upset me was that in the movie, Katniss bought the mockingjay pin!?!? Madge gave it to her in the book!!

THAT in itself bothered me SO much because the passing on of the pin was such a huge part of the symbolism of her becoming their mockingjay.

Very disappointed in that.

A lot of the relationships went unexplained :( I also felt like I needed her narration. You were so much a part of her thoughts in the book which took you so deep inside. That was missing in the movies.

True to the books 110% (aside from the pin).
I still don't like the actor that plays Peeta.

ETA - you also miss out on a lot of the prep team and their relationship.... the avox...

She was given the pin in the movie as well. She tried to pay for it at first, but the woman just gave it to her.

I did NOT read the book but saw the movie and I was lost at this part. I figured it out more or less but still...
It's funny you said that bc that was the only part I was like Chat Icon

Yes!! I was bawling and both parts. I did enjoy the movie! I felt like I got more out of the movie having read the book. DH didn't read the books so I found myself giving him a lot of the back story.

point being, it was Madge who gave it to her when she came to visit her before she left for the games. The pin was passed down from her aunt who was a former tribute.

All that was left out.

I went back to see it with my husband who didn't read the books and I now realize that this movie is geared towards those that read the book. He needed a lot of explanation afterwards Chat Icon

You don't find all of that out (about the aunt going to the games) until the second book (I just finished it 2 days ago). In the first book, all you know is that Madge gives it to her and asks her to wear it as a symbol of District 12. So if the movie is only covering the first book, it would make sense that they didn't tell you that.

Haven't seen the movie, but want to!!
