Mexico Vacation

We are planning a trip to Mexico for my birthday and our 1 year anniversary and trying to decide between the following resorts. Has anyone been there? Opinions? Reviews? Ideas?

- Excellence Cancun or Playa Mujeres
- Royal Playa del Carmen
- Secrets Maroma

DH & I stayed at the Excellence Playa Mujeres back in 2008 for our 2nd honeymoon & it was WONDERFUL! The resort was new so it was pretty empty at the time & we loved it...it was so quiet, peaceful & romantic. We had a Rooftop Terrace room & let me tell you, it was the BEST! We barely ever left our room except to eat, maybe have a few drinks at a bar & to see the shows at night. The mini pool was great & the views were phenomenal! The only down side to the room was the bathroom...it was a weird open concept & there was only a frosted glass door separating the toilet from the main room & it didn't go up all the way to the ceiling so we kept sending each other upstairs when we needed privacy Also, the shower had a window in it that was on the main room, but that didn't bother us...

The food was delicious. The shows at the time were ok, but as I mentioned, they had just opened & I think they were still finding their groove. The beach at the resort was nice, but it had a lot of seaweed - so much so that they had a tractor thing go by a few times a day to clear off the beach! Also, while the water was beautiful & blue, I was surprised that it wasn't actually the crystal clear blue that I had seen when I had stayed right in Cancun. The drink service on the beach was top notch though We also enjoyed the main pools a few times, but again we honestly didn't use them much because we loved our room/terrace so much!

I think that we were about 20-30 min from the middle of Cancun, but having been there 2x before we didn't venture out off of the resort. I really loved the EPM & would love to go again someday...

ETA: If you opt for the EPM & a Terrace room, be sure to ask for the highest room they have so that you have the most privacy! They are kind of stepped down on the sides of the building & if your room is lower the people in the higher Terrace rooms can look down onto your Terrace!

Thanks for the reviews ladies. We booked Secrets because it was a better deal $$ wise. Hope to enjoy this well needed vacation :)

DH and I stayed at secrets Capri several years ago and it was amazing. I'm sure you made a great decision with a secrets resort.

I stayed at one of The Royals sister resorts in Cancun...and upgraded and received a meal at the Royal....and that hotel was amazing!!!! And the food was even more amazing!!! In a heart beat the next time we go to Cancun we would stay at the Royal. It was really 100% luxury. And I am assuming the one you are thinking of is a sister resort so it would also be amazing.
