Vibrams - opinions please!

I'm seriously considering getting a pair. Now that they've been out for a while, can anyone share their opinions on them? How long have you been using them? Do you still love them? Have they helped you to improve in any significant way? Have they helped with any kind of pain (shin, knee, etc) since using them?

I do not wear them, but my co-worker swears by them. He has been wearing them for about 2 years. There is a transition period so you will probably not be able to maintain your mileage unless you switch between shoes and vibrams. He was getting injured before the vibrams and now has fewer problems. If you are a heel striker, there might be a longer adjustment period.

Thanks for the info. I tend to get a bad pain on the side of my shin when I do longer runs. I was wondering if these would help that. I try to follow the Chi running rules, and do the mid-foot strike, so it might not be that bad of a transition. I would definitlely ease into it though. Thanks!

What size do you wear? I have a pair that I received as a gift, and I have never worn them. I tried them on a few times, but I don't like the feeling of something between my toes. They are size 38, which I *think* is 7.5. If you want them, they're all yours :)

I'm more of a 6 1/2 or 7, but thanks so much for the offer!

I'm gonna have to go to a store and try them on, not sure if I'll like the individual toe thing either!

I don't run them but I wear them for walks, after my runs, and weight training,or hanging out on weekends. I love them.

If you don't like the toe thing, check out merrell body glove or new balance minimus. They have the vibram bottom, but it's a regularly shaped shoe. you will get the same experience without the awkwardness. I have the body glove as well and wear them a lot, and DH wears the minimus for running and loves them!

Thanks! I'm hoping to have time next week to try a few of these on.

Re: Vibrams - opinions please!

I have them. A friend of mine has been using them for years and has coached me... she is adamant that I must ease into them very very slowly! So I have used them for 15-20 minutes here and there on the treadmill. I can't say I love them or hate them, I am indifferent. She has been wearing them for years as a regular shoe (walking, just hanging out) but will only run 5k in them. ANything more than that she will wear a regular sneaker. I am more of a distance runner so I don't think I will ever fully embrace the vibrams.

I also have the saucony minimalist sneaker, i think its called hattori. haven't used them much (same as vibrams) but i like the mitten toe design better than the vibram toes.

I was wondering how they were for long distance. I saw a lot of people at the NYC marathon wearing them. It seems like everyone has a different experience with them...some people need the support of a regular sneaker. I'd like to give them a try, I'm so curious to see if it will help my shin problem, or make it worse!

Re: Vibrams - opinions please!

I def saw people running distances in them before - like the Suffolk half and the 10 mile run to the brewery- I guess everyone is different. I am just going by my friend. I consider her an expert on them. Chat Icon

Re: Vibrams - opinions please!

honestly, if you're not sure about the minimalist running thing, buy a pair of cheap water shoes and try them out for a while. start out slow though and make sure you're running with the correct gait (toe/heel - look it up on youtube).

as for the toe thing - see if you can find a place that sells them in the store or try the adidas/reebox/nike knockoffs (don't buy these though - they don't have the same flexibility). try them on and see how they feel. i hated them and opted for a more normal toe box.
