Electric vs. gas stove/oven.
We're redoing our kitchen and are picking new appliances.
I've only used gas stoves and ovens but now that it's time to pick a new stove, I'm curious about electric ones. They have a nice look to them, but how to they compare in terms of heating equally/cooking time and whatnot?
I've had little to no experience with using an electric stove so I'd like some input from those who have used both...pros and cons please
Thanks!

Re: Electric vs. gas stove/oven.
I grew up with electric and switching to gas was pure heaven!! I find that everything cooks better with gas. I can't ever imagine going back to electric. I would be so upset. You can have more control over how things cook with gas, where electric gives you less control. Plus it is easier to use a wok for vegetable stir-fry, a panini/grill pan for cheese paninis, etc... on a gas stove. I was fairly unable to use a lot of special cooking equipment on the electric stove. Also food cooks much quicker with gas. I make meals a lot faster now than I did with electric. Some pros for electric though- much easier to clean!, no gas smells or open flame, better for baking and roasting because there is a much better heat distribution. With gas, I find things tend to cook unevenly in the oven and occasionally on the stovetop. With electric things were pretty consistent. So those are the pros and cons of each that I see, but I would still choose gas hands down.

I prefer a gas stove top, I have a gas range but my oven is electric, but I have used a gas oven before with no complaints either.

Re: Electric vs. gas stove/oven.
If your kitchen is equipped for gas, a gas stove is WAY superior as far as cooking IMO - I loathe my electric stovetop - the oven isn't a huge deal, but the stovetop stinks !!

I have had every combination you can think of.
In my own opinion.. gas stovetop is FAR superior to electric. I like the even heating, the quick heat up, the immediate heat off.
As to ovens, I prefer electric. I like my convection and roast options which were harder to find on gas ovens.
I have a dual fuel range (gas top/electric oven) and I can't imagine ever changing.

I agree! Gas is much quicker and easier to control on the stovetop.

Thank you all so much! I think I'm going to look into gas top/electric oven options. If anyone has a recommendation, please toss it my way

Re: Electric vs. gas stove/oven.
I hate electric. I grew up with gas but we ahve electric in our house now.
On the stovetop it heat very uneven.....so basically if you turn heat down it takes a bit for the burner to cool to the new temp.
My oven is very strange on temp also.

I grew up with gas. My house has electric and I HATE it. When the stove craps out we are converting to gas and getting a new gas stove.

Re: Electric vs. gas stove/oven.
I grew up with gas and now have electric and I dont like it...the only benefit of the electric is that you can boil water super quick and the convection oven...we converted to gas but not the stove since its brand new and it would be such a waste to get a new one.. in a couple of yrs we are going to switch over

You will find that there are really not a lot of options once you go dual fuel. Only a few manufacturers have it and there are not a lot of models IN the stores.
I chose a Jenn-Aire with a double oven. I like having two ovens - and I liked the Jenn-Aire because the top oven was smaller but still very roomy. I actually do most of my cooking in the top and use the bottom only for roasts and bigger items.
A full grate was also important to me.. I didn't like the types with 4 separate grates. My model is no longer available... but this KitchenAid one is VERY similar:Dual Fuel

there's only 2 things electric got over a gas stove:
1: electric stoves are cheaper 2: the top is much easier to clean than gas.
Anyone who went from electric to gas will choose gas.
Anyone who went from gas to electric, wish they still had gas.

Re: Electric vs. gas stove/oven.
I grew up with gas, and now have electric. I hate the stove top! The glass top looks nice, but it's so hard to adjust the temperature when you need to go, let's say from a boil to a simmer. Things burn quickly. I would choose gas in a second if I could.

Just so you know you can get convection with a gas oven. I have a Wolf all gas model (propane actually) and my larger oven has a convection / fan option.
They say gas ovens are better for meats. Electric ovens are better for baking. I take both of these statements with a grain of salt.

ITA. I have a gas cooktop and an electric convection wall oven (Thermador) and I LOVE the combination! My SIL is a fabulous cook & suggested doing this, and it was the best decision I ever made.
