20 w sono, Bad news bright spot on baby's heart

We just got back from the US. We are having a Chat Icon

Chat Icon

But here is "bad " news , they saw a tiny white spot on baby's heart which can be one of the markers for down syndrome .
First the US tech did the sono, then a dr came in and did the scan again.
She said this is a variation of normal and there are no other markers, lips/ nose , eyes are good, everything looks perfect. I'm 31 . She said my NT Scan/ blood work and the EFP (part 2 of the NT scan) were excellent, actually she said " all the results were not just good, but they were extremely good, you had results everyone wants to have" so she said we have an option of having an amnio but she doesn't think we need to. I asked her if she would do the amnio in my shoes , she said " absolutely not" basically she doesn't think it's anything to worry about at all.
She didn't say anything about getting another US, but I am going to see my OB on Fri and I will ask , he is also a high risk OB & a geneticist so I'll see what he says.
I just wanted to post, share and ask if anyone has been in this situation and what the outcome was? how did the drs handle it? We will not be getting an amnio so that's not even something I'm thinking about.
Honestly I'm not even that worried, but I am a little and would like to see if others have been in my shoes.

Thanks

Congrats on your Chat Icon!

My nephew had heart issues in utero with no other markers. The monitered my sister and he saw a cardiologist for two years after he was born.

He is now a healthy active 12 year old.

I know it's hard not to worry but maybe your Dr can ease your mind when you see him this week.Chat Icon

Congrats on being Team Pink! Chat Icon Chat Icon

Many people get weird / bad diagnoses from sonograms - most don't mean anything in the end.

Speak with your doctor - maybe they can do a follow-up sonogram later?

Good luck! Chat Icon

My son also had a white spot on his heart (echogenic intracardiac focus) that was noticed at my anatomy scan. There were no other markers at all for downs so my OB told me not to worry about it and that most of the time they go away before the baby is even born. Of course, I stressed about it, but in the end, it was gone by my growth sono at 31 weeks and he is now a perfectly healthy 3.5 yr old.

I know it is easier said than done, but try not to worry too much about it. We didn't get an amnio and didn't even see a genetic counselor (which was offered to us at the time) and everything worked out fine.

Re: 20 w sono, Bad news bright spot on baby's heart

When i went for my 20 week the doc said she saw some calcium on LOs heart. (which was used as a marker for DS) When DH and I expressed concern she told us there was really nothing to worry about since my numbers were so good. (1 in 24,000). she told us not to worry and not even to go for an amnio because if anything it would only lower our numbers to 1 in 13.000.

Dont get me wrong i was still extremely nervous, but the docs and my OB did not think it was anything to worry about so i will try not to. Much easier said than done but still gotta try...

When I went for my 20 week they found the same bright spot. The doctor told me because my blood work and everything else came back great she wasn't really concerned. At my growth sono 12 weeks later the spot was gone. Try not to worry too much about it, especially since you don't have any other markers. Chat Icon

Congrats on your little girl. My ds had a spot on his heart too and was measuring small then had issues maintaining his fluid. He is perfectly healthy. The spot went away by the time he was born. He has no issues other then being spirited but that's his dad's fault lol

Re: 20 w sono, Bad news bright spot on baby's heart

They found a spot on DD's heart at the anatomy scan as well. They sent us to the perinatologist a week later for a follow-up on a special machine.

To be a "real" marker, the spot has to be seen from at least 3 different angles and should be as white as bone.

Once we were on the specialist's machine, they confirmed that neither of these were true.

We did not elect to have the amnio. Our OB and the perinatologist said this is just the case of being over-cautious because the machines pick up more now. They both said it's probably just a strong muscle. DD is perfect (she's 16 m now).

Try not to worry. Go to the specialist. See what they say. But it's highly likely that it's NOTHING.

Re: 20 w sono, Bad news bright spot on baby's heart

Our baby has an echogenic focus as well. My doctor was not concerned because there were no other markers and my bloodwork was good. She thought that it would go away by 36 weeks or so. I just had a sono at 34 weeks, and it's still there, so I'm a little nervous, but hoping that it doesn't mean anything. Most things I read say that in the absence of any other markers, it really isn't significant.
