I heard putting bay leaves or cloves by their entry points will stop them from coming in because they hate the scent.
We don't have ants, but my MIL does and it's annoying because she refuses to kill them or actively do anything about it. So, when DD is there she'll spot them and point them out and I see them all over the place.

Use borax instead. You can find it in the supermarket or Wal-Mart/Target in the detergent aisle. It is completely non-toxic to humans and animals.
I mix it dry with sugar and sprinkle it in my garden to get rid of the ant hills. I also pour a line of the mixture on my windowsills and doorframes. Never tried mixing it with water. I'll have to try that.
Also works great on the laundry.

Terro Traps!! Works like a charm but you have to deal with Ant Happy Hour for 2-3 days.

I get ants right outside my front door. I have been using vinegar... it has been helping to keep them away for a while, maybe a few weeks or so, then they come back and I have to break out the vinegar again.

Since we have super ants here (aka Fire Ants) ants are very unwelcome. its worth its weight in gold to pay the exterminator every 3m. When I was in my apt I used cinnamon to stop them. then used vinager, water, soap to kill those around (since AJ was so small).
I hate ants. Its is a serious draw back to moving to TX. But the religious application by exterminators for EVERYONE in our neighborhood seems to be keeping them at bay. Its when a house goes vacant or up for sale we get nervous.
We had a mound growing outside by the gate, right on the corner of the concrete to our house that was the corner to our bedroom. Those little twerps go in and thru our electrical and into my bed!!!! Thankfully they were fire ants but still. and truly thankful our exterminators work on weekends

Try the borax with sugar - it really works. I had a huge ant hill in my garden, it was so big that it heaved my ornamental grass about 6 inches higher than it was originally planted. There were smaller hills too. I used the borax/sugar mix and within a couple of weeks all the ants were gone.

I use the Terro Traps too. I believe it's just borax as well. They work. The key is to let them come and eat it and not kill the ants. Anytime I've used to liquid Terro Traps, the ants are gone in a day or two!

This works! We did it in our pantry, and we haven't seen them since. We left it out for a few days (2-3) and threw it away. A few stragglers came back after a week or so; we put another one out for about a week and no issues since.
I got the boric acid (Borax) from Amazon.

I guess but the thing is with the quarterly treatments we get inbetween treatments for free whenever. So that weekend call was free and the ants were gone within hours.

Re: ugh, the most wonderful time of year.....anyone else?
This is the first year, (fingers crossed) I do not have them YET. I started to use Terro last year and sprayed the you know what out of the area I think they were coming from, and maybe just maybe I killed the nest and the queeen. I like to think I did. I usually get them late march. This year I am armed with stuff incase. Sorry, bugs skeeve me. Terro is the best stuff. Hope this helps. Also, put all opened things -like cookies, pasta, etc. in ziploc bags, or the fridge. We also stopped eating in the kitchen and now are in the dining room for the warmer months- maybe that is helping? Not sure..... I also vacuum every night, sweep etc. I actually started to try to figure it out last year where they could be coming from, and it looked like they were entering thru a window in my bathroom, going in the drain for water or the kitchen above it on the 2nd floor.

I know a little excessive, but I could not stand it anymore. I never had a ton of them, maybe 20-30. I sprayed the window, the tub, the drain, pulled up the stopper, and recaulked around the window.

Ace hardware has them, they have the whole line of Terro. I have the traps, the outdoor and indoor spray. By far the best stuff you can get for them, aside from an exterminator.

I used the Terro traps this year for the 1st time from recommendations on here. They absolutely work! Anything else I tried never did much. I got them at Home Depot and saw them at Lowes too.

Just wanted to jump in and give my $.02 on boric acid.
Please look up the toxicology on this first. It can cause kidney failure amount other things and be lethal.

Re: ugh, the most wonderful time of year.....anyone else?
Also, do not leave dirty dishes in the dishwasher, we tend to eat on paper this time of year , no dirty dishes in the sink, take out the garbage every day, we put our garbage right out and in those shopping bags from the supermarket, clean the tops of the stove and counter every night. I think this would stop a scent trail. can you tell I have been dealing with this every year since 2007ish? I keep checking and bracing myself I am going to see them .
