I thought golden retrievers don't bark often?
I am surprised to say my golden barks. She is a puppy and pretty mellow for one, but she barks sometimes, randomly.
Any ideas as to why?

Re: I thought golden retrievers don't bark often?
We have had many goldens growing up. They seem to have been one extreme or the other. My sisters golden barks every time a leaf falls or a mouse farts. I swear sometimes she just stands int he backyard barking just to hear her own voice. My dog only barks at dogs walking by and when people come to the door. My moms only when someone comes to the door. We asked the vet and he just said some dogs have more to say then others.

We have a lab retriever and she did not bark for her first year or so, and now she'll bark randomly as well. I think it's a temperament / personality thing...I've seen quiet goldens and barking ones! Hopefully she keeps it to just random times!!

my mom has a golden who is a barker - we used to spray him with water in his face and that stopped him for a couple of years- he is bad again but my mom babies him
mine on the other hand - rarely barks - but he does howl like a beagle when the fire whistle goes off

This just made me laugh!! lol
My SIL golden is like that...she barks all the time, even scares herself when she does, but the above describes her exactly.
My golden, not really a barker. When she barks something is wrong, but she rarely barks. I have trained her, that when I say protect, she barks a really mean bark. When I do tell her that to scare someone she means it...lol

My Golden only barks if someone comes to the door, unless DH isn't home and it's late, then he'll bark at any strange noise in or outside the house. He's very funny like that.

Ours is 8 and she hardly ever barks unless she wants something ( food, to go out etc).

Re: I thought golden retrievers don't bark often?
I had a golden for 13 years and I swear I never heard his voice. He was silent. I think it's definitely a temperament thing, but can also be influenced by other factors. My dad's Portuguese Water Dog didn't bark for the first 7 years of her life. When my parent's split, my dad had a gf he lived with for a while. Her golden barked, and my dad's dog picked up on it. Now she barks sometimes, usually just to hear her own voice. It all depends! Dogs are individuals!
