If you're having twins
Are you considered high risk? Are you seeing a peri? I did IVF and I have thrombo issues as well but some idiot nurse from a potential ob's office I spoke to said "that's not a good enough reason to be considered high risk" (Im calling her an idiot solely cuz she made that judgement without knowing my history). My RE said he thought I should see a peri for those reasons, which is good enough for me.
Sorry I'm posting here, I dont feel comfortable posting anywhere else lol

Re: If you're having twins
im having twins and I see a Dr that secializes in high risk, My RE knew the dr well and was comfortable sending me back there. I also just posted on multiple births (you can check it out if you like) about needing a peri/mfm. He told me not unless there are complcations. He will start doing cervix checks at 20 weeks. I also did IVF but have no known issues. I think twins are considered high risk because there are 2. In the end, you have to do what you'er comfortable with and that's all that matters. Mommy needs peace of mind!

does he say that as he counts the out-of-pocket money that he collects from all of his "high-risk" IVF patients that have no out-of-network coverage??
im just kidding (mostly kidding). i didnt have twins, did do IVF, and prob could've used an appointment or two with a peri. although i doubt it would've changed my outcome much since there's nothing really that can prevent pre-e or accreta.

Re: If you're having twins
Twins alone do not make you high risk, but your condition would certainly bring you into that category.
I had to be referred to my peri with a letter from my RE, but I heard not all MFM/Peri are the same.
I know that there are 2 groups at NSUH - 1 is where i go, dr, klein/nimaroff etc. I am not sure of the names of the others...

Twins alone do make you high risk.. there are many potentntial complications that come along with carrying multiples. Some mihght breeze right through it-hopefuly we do! But for the most part, most OB's should treat the pregnancy as high risk.

Re: If you're having twins
What does the nurse know?? From what I was told, having clotting issues can cause tiny clots in the placenta which doesn't allow as much nutrients to pass through. This is a bigger issue with twins since you are nourishing 2 babies and our bodies weren't made for this in the first place.

I see Dr. Herman also. Love him! My sister also sees him and she just had twins 2 weeks ago at 32 weeks. He was great during her pregnancy and saw her 1x a week. She also saw an MFM at LIJ I think once a month.

She did have complications. She needed ivig treatment 2x a week and also ended up in the hospital for 6 daysbc her blood sugar was over 400!! Dr. Herman would rather see you and monitor you on his own. He didnt deliver the twins but the doctor that did was great! He has delivered some of my other nieces and nephews though. I pray he is on call when I deliver!
I'm due Aug 29. What about you?

Re: If you're having twins
Crashing (Not having twins)
Last I checked Dr. Herman was not a high risk doctor. I currently go to the practice and asked about this and was told they are all very good, have delivered multiples but no one is "high risk" I'm not sure what the doctor technically has to do to be considered a "high risk doctor."
ETA: It would be great if he was considered high risk. I'd be curious to see if he technically is. It's great that you feel so comfortable with him and that your RE is happy with him too! I never asked my RE about him.

Re: If you're having twins
This whole high risk thing seems very subjective, from doctor to doctor. It's incredibly frustrating.
I had a small scare today so I decided I'm going to see Dr K because I know for a fact I will be in good hands with him. Thanks for your responses!

hmm, Im not sure what credentials are needed. Both the nurse in that office and my RE said he was high risk.. i guess I can ask again. Who informed you that he wasn't?

Re: If you're having twins
I don't think he is technically high risk but he deals with a lot of high risk patients. You are in good hands with him, I wouldn't worry.
Cate are you looking for a high risk ob or an mfm?

Re: If you're having twins
Its great if you can go to Dr K...I went to him with my first pregnancy (for gestational diabetes) and trust him all the way!!! This was before being diagnosed as secondary IF. Unfort I do not hv out of network coverage this year and I am completely bummed I can not see him this time around! Especially since I have more diagnosed issues and I am 8wks preggers with Twins!!!
I def think with your history you should see a peri and/or high risk OBGYN. Some docs are just use to dealing with high riskm patients, not sure if they have any other spec credentials! Just experience ,but you can always ask them! A peri specializes in maternal fetal medicine which is what you want with your history b/c complications can arise and they can better detect and deal with it along with your OBGYN!
GOOD LUCK!!!

Re: If you're having twins
i'm having twins and i wasnt told i was high risk but after my NT Scan yesterday the Dr said i should come back at 14 weeks for them to start checking my cervix. After that i would go back in about 4-5 weeks later. i'm assuming it depends on how my cervix is at the next appt? She did explain that these "extra" visits are done because i'm having twins.
