If making them yourself saves you money and you have the time to do it then I say make them.
ITA. I'm all for useful favors that you can make yourself! I personalized pencil boxes for DS's last party, and the boxes cost only a $1 each.
What sort of markers did you use? I am worried about finding markers that don't run or wash off and are non-toxic.

I didn't use markers for mine, but I'm assuming you could use paint pens. If you find a brand you like, let me know! Instead, I cut vinyl adhesive using a Silhouette Cameo to personalize the kids' favors:
