I am a product of the Bay Shore School District. I got a fantastic education. It is very diverse. They follow a princeton plan structure so there are three k-2 buildings, two 3-5 buildings, a MS and a HS. I had the opportunity to sub for the district as well and I would feel comfortable sending DS there. I was involved in so many activities in high school and there were a lot of opportunities to do so. If you have any specific questions, feel free to FM me!

Re: Bay Shore SD

I grew up in Bay Shore and my sister currently lives here and her son is in 3rd grade. We got an amazing education. I was in honors/accelerated classes.
Yes there are goods and bads just like in every school district but they definitely have excellent programs you can take advantage of. Several people I graduated with are teachers and I have my PhD (if that is any indicator for you).

Re: Bay Shore SD

I taught there as a long term leave replacement and its bad rap is totally unmerited.

I'd send my kids there in a minute.

I was at both the middle and high school.

My colleagues were fantastic and they have some great programs there, including IB at the high school.

Re: Bay Shore SD

I LOVE Bay Shore SD!!!! It got a bad reputation because about 10 years ago it wasn't the greatest school (not the worst either), but it really turned around. I would much rather send my kids to BS than a lot of other districts on LI. I think it's so wonderfully diverse (racially and economically) and they set such high standards for the kids!

Re: Bay Shore SD

My husband and I are both educators. My husband teaches in N. Babylon and always has positive things to say about the school district. The programs in the HS are good and they really cater to the sports programs also. He said they had a real good superintendent who really worked on making the district a competitive one. She has left though.

Are you sure that it is Bayshore school District. As a kid, I lived in Bayshore, but it was the Brentwood School district.

There is also a section of Bayshore that goes to West Islip district.

I've lived in Bay Shore my whole life. I have a son in kindergarten currently. I think it's as good as any other public school on LI.

Bay Shore gets a lot of negative reviews and I'm not sure why. It's very diverse. The schools have a lot of great programs. They offer extra help to students who need it, without a fight.

If you have any questions feel free to FM me.

I live in bay shore with Brentwood so I'm 100 percent positive it's bay shore. Would NEVER send my kids to Brentwood. I know it's just a town over but there is a huge difference.

Re: Bay Shore SD

Another product of Bay Shore here!

I loved my town and I loved my school. Lots of pride. I think it's really kind of unique in that you will have very poor families and very wealthy families all in the same schools. A lot of Bay Shore families are legacy families.. people grow up, buy in the town and send their kids there. My sisters still live in Bay Shore and my nephew graduated Bay Shore and his son is now in elementary school there. The two families I grew up with also continued to live there... my girlfriend's brother bought her parents house and my other best friend's sister bought her parent's house! Their children and my sister's grandson (and my kids) are all growing up together as a result!

They have a ton of programs. I was able to complete college course work and take a lot of AP classes for college credit while going there. They have well known special education program as well. Their music and drama programs were phenomenal, but I am not familiar enough to know if they remain as good as they were. They also have some top notch sports teams. Scholarships were abundant when I graduated... i think half of our class got some form of scholarship or another.

They also have a unique Spanish immersion class that you can put your child in a lottery for. All 3 of my girlfriends children went through it and the two older ones speak fluent Spanish now (they are 16 and 12). Her youngest also has a good grasp of the language at 7.

I would have bought in Bay Shore if my husband wasn't so against it! He felt it was 'my' territory and didn't want me to have teh home field advantage! LOL

Re: Bay Shore SD

My DH has been a teacher in the HS for 9 years, and we're considering moving into the district when we buy our forever house. Lots of teachers live in-district, which speaks volumes to me.

Overall, I think it's fantastic. It's one of the few districts that's truly integrated; all the different kids from different backgrounds really get along. I can't speak for the individual elementary or middle schools, but I think the HS is great. Academically, the school offers something for everyone. They have a fantastic Special Ed program and a huge honors program and just started an IB program. The sports teams are consistently good. The list of clubs is ridiculously long. Their 4-year college attendance rate is consistent with that of much ritzier schools.

Are there kids from iffy families that attend? Yes. Are there drugs? Probably. Is there a shady area of town? Of course. But the problems you see in Bay Shore aren't unique; you'll see the same stuff everywhere.

Re: Bay Shore SD

I have a unique perspective on school districts because of the business I am in (I am co-owner of Darlings & Divas). I have done countless birthday parties for children in neighboring school districts: Seaford, Wantagh, Merrick, Bellmore, Massapequa, Lindenhurst, Copiague, Babylon, Deer Park, Bay Shore, W. Islip, Islip, etc.

I have to say the children and parents I have had from Bay Shore have been wonderful. I have heard nothing but positive things from the parents that have their children in the district.

The children themselves have been polite and well-mannered and spoke well time after time from party to party.

They are not bratty or entitled for the most part, which I see a lot of.

I would not hesitate to send my child to Bay Shore and I currently send my DD to Amityville SD.

On Long Island (I'm born & raised) a not good SD usually means not primarily white. Most will say this isn't true, but the list of "bad" schools are those that are not primarily white: Bayshore, Brentwood, Amityville, Copiague, Roosevelt, etc.

If you really want to get a feel for the school, speak to someone at the local schools (a social worker) and ask for a tour while school is in session. This is what I did when I was deciding whether to send my DD to Catholic School or Public.

I went into the tour with many preconceptions from the neighborhood and this website, and what I saw was completely different and wonderful.

Thank you. The tour sounds like a great idea. I don't care what races or nationalities that are in the district. I've lived in Brentwood my entire life and it's disgusting how bad the town now is. The academics are great but when there is gang violence, shootings, etc once a week something has to be done. My biggest worry is that brentwood will spill into bs and that in 5-10 yrs it will be just as bad as Brentwood
