trigeminal neuralgia
Does anyone have this or know of anyone that does. We are 99% sure that DH has it, and wanted to know what you/they did for the pain and what kind of treatment there was.
also if you can recommend a neurologist i would greatly appreciate it.

Re: trigeminal neuralgia
I had a patient with this. she was in awful awful pain. as far as i know the only thing they did was give her Neurontin (this was a nursing home tho).
I've seen Dr. Neil Rosenthal in the city and liked him.

Re: trigeminal neuralgia
They thought I had trigeminal neuralgia and I was being treated for it for a few years. I went to a new neurologist and it turned out the pain i was experiencing on the side of my face (starting around my ear and radiating through my eyes) is really probably due to migraine, and treating it as migraine has really helped. I have a GREAT neurologist in Queens.
Unless the person has had shingles on their face, trigeminal neuralgia is exceedingly rare in young people. Another indication that i didn't have it was that I did not have and pain or numbness going into my mouth. I did have jaw pain, but I have TMJ disorder, so it's complicated.
When it was being treated as trigeminal neuralgia, i was on topamax (nasty drug, but I'd had bad reactions to neurontin), which helped, mainly because it's also used for migraines, and pain medication. My pain management doc prescribed me morphine and told me to crush the pill, mix it with lotion, and rub it on my face.
my face is hurting now just thinking about the pain I was in.
Since trigeminal neuralgia is so rare in young people, and really any overactive nerve might react the same way, one thing you can do that won't hurt is to take supplements. I was out of work for 3 months with migraines and now they are totally under control with VITAMINS. I take CoQ10, B12, Magensium and Butterbur extract. Definitely see a neurologist, but I think those supplements are worth a try.

Re: trigeminal neuralgia
I have it. I'm treated with Neurontin and pain meds. I'm still getting shocks so I may be switched to Tegretol. TN responds well to epileptic meds.... The Tegretols, Neurontin, dilantin, trilepital. Sometimes combination meds are used with anti depressants or muscle relaxants.
My dr is with stony brook, but another hospital with drs with knowledge of tn is Winthrop.
