Aging out of EI
DS turns 3 in October and I have no idea what I am suppose to do when he ages out of EI. We live in Nassau County. He currently gets ST 3X a week. 45 minutes each session. And he gets OT 2X a week for 45 minutes each session. He is basically done with OT as it isn't doing anything for him. He still is behind in speech and they are working with his feeding issues during 1-2 sessions. What do I have to do to make sure he gets therapy once he turns 3. I know a lot of people who have had a hard time with school districts.

Re: Aging out of EI
your service coordinator should be able to help you with this process...
you need to register him with your district and a meeting will be scheduled.
you will be asked if you want him to age out on his birthday or December 31.
what district if you don't mind me asking?

Call the school district and ask for an evaluation.

Re: Aging out of EI
He needs to be tested (evaluated) by your school district by his 3rd birthday. If he is found eligible to receive services by your school district he can stay in EI until DEcember 31 then he would transfer to CPSE services. The recommended time to start the transition to CPSE is 6 months prior to his 3rd birthday. So you need to go to Levittown and register him and request an evaluation. I believe you have to go to Abbey Lane for registration.
Also, the school district is also the one who could recommend a school program and if that is an option you really want to get moving on this to get him placed by september.
Your therapist should also be able to guide you through the process.

Thank you... We hate to see his speech therapist go. She has worked wonders with him.. I will get there this week and get the ball rolling.

some times you can keep your Speech Therapist if they work with CPSE children and he qualifies for speech.
our Speech therapist has been with us since DS was 15 months old... he will be 5 in Aug, and then we loose her because we don't think he will get speech at home for kindergarten

Re: Aging out of EI
I will just add that if he only needs speech, I would keep him in EI until December. EI tends to be more generous with services and a LOT more flexible with scheduling services and doing makeup sessions.
