DH and I went to London for part of our HM, had a great time!
The Tower of London is a must IMO. Be prepared though to spend the majority of the day there. There's alot to see, and I would suggest doing the Beefeater tour first. The Crown Jewels are also on display there.
Westminster Abbey (I LOVE old churches)
We also went to a number of museums.
Take in a show at the West End (that's like our Broadway)
Shopping - Harrods is a must 
I've heard the London Eye is great. It's a huge looking ferris wheel type thing with an enclosed bubble looking seating compartment. Supposedly the best views of London. I don't like heights so we didn't do that.
We went to Parliment and sat in on one of the House of Commons sessions as well as a House of Lords session.... boring I know, but DH loves this kind of stuff.

i recommend going to st. paul's cathedral and walking up to the very top of the dome. great view from up there! don't go if you're afraid of heights.
not sure when you're going but if it's at the end of august/beginning of sept check and see if the palace is open for tours (check online and buy tix before you go). they only do them in the summer when the royal family is on vacation. we got a ticket that allowed us in the royal mews, the queen's gallery and then the palace. it was very very cool.

We did this too, but someplace else (don't remember the name of the hotel though!) A few weeks after we got back, I recreated it for Sunday brunch.
Also, We enjoyed seeing the changing of the gaurd at Buckingham Palace.

As well as the suggestions above, here are my personal favorites...
Good areas to walk around: Covent Garden, Knotting Hill, the Kings Road.
Afternoon tea: The Dorchester or Claridges.
Shopping: Selfridges, Harvey Nichols, Harrod's (especially the food hall). Petticoat Lane Market is famous and worth a visit. Oxford Street for all kinds of shops.
Outside of London: Kew Gardens, Hampton Court, Windsor Castle.

I agree with all of the recommendations. One of the "musts" (although I never did it) was tea at the Savoy. It's pricey, but I heard it's a great experience.
I lived in Camden Town for a semester during college and always loved walking around the Camden market. It's a funky area with lots of fun things to buy.
I really liked the Victoria and Albert museum. I also loved St. Paul's cathedral. It was really beautiful.

I would say, get on a bus, go to Euston Station, take a train and get the hell out of London asap! Head for Manchester on the next train available!
Oh, its a north/south thing you see. I live in the North, therefore London is full of snooty Londoners.
But London is a great city...take an open top bus to get your bearings, eat some fish and chips...have high tea at the Savoy, go to the Zoo, get on the Eye, go to Greenwich to see the Cutty Sark, head to Primrose Hill to see Sadie Frost, Eat at Jamie Olivers restaurant *15*, head out of London on day trips...swim in the Serpentine, ride the Tube. Go for food on Brick Lane in the East End (have some Jellied Eels...) See a show in the West End (Ooh Evita is opening again...) Go shopping at Libertys, oooh Eat at Yautcha, or Wagamamma, or Yo Sushi...head into Carnaby Street for more shopping....
Where are you staying? Also surely Farah can help out with some suggestions.

If you have time, see if you can take a bus to Stonehenge. I lived there for 6 months in college and went back with DH 2 years ago. We took a bus tour to Stonehenge and Bath, which was fantastic.

I went to London two summers ago. I had a blast! I went to the changing of the guards at Buckingham Palace, did the Tower of London, took a ride on the London Eye, saw Big Ben, Parliment, Westminster Abbey. You definately need to go to Harrods. Wen to the studio where the Beatles recorded. Walked down abbey rd. which was on the cover of one of their albums. I also went to warwick castle which was pretty neat. That dept. store is amazing! You can also take the Erostar to Paris, which is what I did. It's fast and pretty reasonable.

Don't listen to Rachel - you'd need a Visa and a cockney rhyming slang (don't even ask, you don't want to know!!!) dictionary to get around up north!
Okay, things to do in London....besides finding an authentic pub to park yourself in all day...
Parliament, Big Ben & Westminster Abbey are all within a short stroll of one another and all basically involve standing outside of it and taking a picture (depending on when you're going, you can sit in on a session in Parliament - but I nearly cried I was so bored - plus, they recess for the summer). Westminster has weird opening times and I'm not sure I've ever been able to make it inside, so you might want to call ahead of time. From there, you can walk up to Trafalgar Square and go to the National Gallery, and then on to Covent Garden.
When my parents came to visit, we took the ferry (which leaves from a pier in front of the London Eye and is only about £4) down to Greenwich. On a nice day, it's a nice boat ride and the staff gives commentary on the sites as you're passing them - generally they're pretty funny. In Greenwich, there's an astronomy museum and you can go to the Date Line and take a picture with one foot in each hemisphere!
Tower of London is a must. Lots of armor, eerie old English stories about ghosts and dungeons and all that fun stuff.
As far as museums - I've never been (I know I'm awful) but the British Museum is excellent. I really like the Victoria and Albert as well.
Borough Market is a great way to spend a Saturday morning, but gets quite busy. I like to walk down Portobello Road as well - lots of antiques etc, but expensive.
St James Palace is where you can get close enough to the guards to try to make them laugh or smile (they won't, but it's fun trying!)
Oh, and have Sunday Lunch in a pub - that's REALLY English!

We went on a pub crawl and the one the stands out is London's oldest authentic pub, Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese.
Go on the Underground to get around and don't forget to 'mind the gap.'
Sights I loved:
Westminster Abbey
Tower of London- at the Tower you can watch the ceremony of the keys at 9:30pm. You have to request ticket at least two months in advance, but it is free.
British Library-they have COOL original books.
Harrods is must!
If you get a chance to leave London, I highly recommend going to Bath by train. Its a short ride and a beautiful city!

Just kidding...in the UK there is quite a HUGE North/South Divide and well, its a bit like New York really...people in London tend to forget that there is another part of the country outside of London....but people oop North...well, as they say, its grim up north...people up North, well they stay up north really. I live in the North West...so feel like a Northerner...even though....shhhhhhh, don't tell anyone. My huband is a Londoner!!!

A must is the "London Eye" - tons of fun 
Of course "Big Ben & Parlement"
If you have the time, you can even take a 3 hr train ride to "Paris" for an over night or something... I did that for a 3 day weekend, because I was in London for 2 weeks. Have fun riding the "Tube".

everyone gave you so many great suggestions...my only suggestions other than the standard is to try and do a "walk" (we did the jalk ripper tour) or do a pub crawl, they are so fun!!
also, london is famed for it's theatre so we caught a show while we were there
have fun you'll love it!
