Do you always stick with the registry when it comes to baby showers?
One of my closest friends is having a baby. In the past, I always bought gifts from a registry. I can't help but feel it is a bit impersonal.
Do you always stick with the registry?
I want to do a personalized gift basket with high end newborn stuff vs buying the normal swing, pack n play, etc. I know when I had a baby, I did prefer gifts from my registry.

Nope, for my good friends I would get a small thing off their registries and then I would do something more personal.

I always do. At least for the baby. The registry is the things they really need.
I hated havign to return things that were not on the registry.

I always stick to the registry and then I may add things. The registry is stuff that they want and need. It was such a PIA that I got so many things that I couldn't return or exchange since they were not from my registry.

That is very true. I did so much returning and exchanging when the baby was born.
I clearly remember BRU offering me like $2 for items that were clearly much more than that. I ended up keeping it and never using it.
I will stick to the registry. If anything, I will bring something personalized after the baby is born. I don't know his name yet.

Agreed. Stick to the registry.. I'm a very practical person and don't like sentimental gifts and knick-knacks. If every single practical thing was bought off my registry then I would encourage people to be creative but I registered for stuff I needed and really wanted to get it.

I will usually buy off the registry then if need more something that I always found helpful that they didn't have on it. Or for the wishing well
I would save the more personal stuff for whne they are born

I stick to the registry and then add a few smaller things in on my own (ie - outfits, diapers, etc)

Re: Do you always stick with the registry when it comes to baby showers?
For the most part I do, but for my sil or super close friends I add other things or maybe upgrade something. Like instead of a Baby Bijorn I will splurge on an Ergo. I agree the reg. is important, but as a BTDT mom I like to add things like Sophie, homemade baby wipes with the recipe attached, or maybe instead of J&J I'll get Burt's Baby Bee's.

Re: Do you always stick with the registry when it comes to baby showers?
i would buy off their registry but put a personal touch to it.
for example... i made a diaper basket cake
diapers, basket bins for those square cubbies, and i filled it with a ton of things from her registry.
i wish i had pictures....

Re: Do you always stick with the registry when it comes to baby showers?
I always try to get my close friends something on the registry that is a must have, ike the infant carseat. Before DS, I also made them personalized stamped thank you notes, but that's no longer in the cards, lol! My BFF got me a vera bradley diaper bag that I didnt register for and love!

I try to stick to the registry. If there is nothing left I will give a GC to the store they are registered at (BRU/BBB/Target) so they can get what they still need.

Re: Do you always stick with the registry when it comes to baby showers?
Yes and No.
I would factor in a few things. How many people will be going to her shower (will she most likely get everything off of her registry)? Would she appreciate a sentimental gift??
From a close friend, I would have liked a well thought out gift basket...but I'm a bit of a mushy person.

I usually get them something off their registry that they will need and then get them something sentimental. For my last good friend to have a baby I made her a clothesline of holiday bibs.

ITA.
I did not have a shower, but had a registry. After DD was born, I cannot tell you how many outfits I got in all assorted sizes that I did not need, yet didn't get the majority of my registry. While its nice for anyone to get anything, I so would have preferred the things I needed.
ETA: a very close friend was well meaning and got us a very pretty personalized bookcase that we have no room for. I almost resented this. Same thing goes for a friend of DH's who got us a mezuzah (sp) for DD's room that was hideous. Both gifts were very expensive, and both we hated! So, even if you are very well meaning, it doesn't mean the recipient wants or needs it.

Typically I will purchase one or more larger items from the registry and then throw in a few non-registry items like clothes or books.

Re: Do you always stick with the registry when it comes to baby showers?
I try to because most people take a lot of time thinking about what they need and want when they do their registry do I try not to deviate from that. Sometimes I buy something extra but I stick to the registry as much as possible.

I get something off the registry, then something I think would be useful I didn't see on the registry.

This is how I have changed registries gifts as well...
When BFF had her baby I told her to take the jogging stroller off her registry (so no one would buy it) and I bought her a BOB.
I also like to make something special with what they have on the registry - it's what they want. Bath Basket, Sleeping Basket, etc
