Going Away party for someone entering the military - gift ideas?
DH's cousin is leaving for boot camp and his family is throwing him a low key party at their house to say goodbye. DH and I are unsure of what to bring as a gift. Cash? Something that could be useful to him at bootcamp, like a care package or something like that? We can't think of anything. Is a gift even expected in a situation like this?

When we send packages overseas to my friends brother we send stationary, peanuts, those little toothbrushes with the toothpaste on them .... Since it is only boot camp maybe an iTunes gift card

We gave my BIL cash....when they are in boot camp they really are restricted in what they can have with them

I would just bring a nice bottle to the party and then send a gift once the soldier graduates from Basic training (or AIT) send a gift (cash is usually best because privates make close to NOTHING).

My brother actually left for boot camp this morning for the Marines.
He was allowed to take nothing with him, no suitcase, no clothes, no phone or iPod... nothing. The only things he could take with him was his license, social security card and $20.
So any gift you give will probably be used before or after boot camp. Which for my brother means 13 weeks.

My husband was a Marine and when you head over to boot camp, you don't bring anything with you other than id and maybe $20. They provide everything to you once you're there. So, usually anything you give them will be used either before or after boot camp.
You can always give cash, but to be honest with you, I don't see the necessity in giving a gift....maybe it's just me but DH and I never give a gift for something like this knowing that they can't take it with them. Since it's your nephew though, maybe the money...or even some stationary so he can write home.
