Lunchbox/Lunch bag - What's "cool"
I will be sending DS to kindergarten in September and I want to buy his lunch box this summer. What do the kids use these days?? I remember using a metal lunch box with a thermos. I see those insulated lunch bags in the stores. What are/did you get for your kids? I'm sure DS will want what his friends have so I would like to get what the other kids have so I dont have to buy something different.

For Kindergarten, most of them seem to have the soft-sided, insulated character lunchboxes (DD's "best friend" is another girl who has a similar Hello Kitty lunchbox. That's the reason they are best friends.... )

I agree with the above - this is what my DS used for kindergarten this year (as did a bunch of his classmates).

In terms of cool, I would think whatever character is out then (Pirates was always a big thing). But getting a character lunchbox usually means you're paying for the license & quality suffers.
Go with Lands End. If it doesn't wear well, they have a lifetime guarantee on their products.

We have one from Pottery Barn. It's held up nicely, and not a character (which I'm not a fan of).

Re: Lunchbox/Lunch bag - What's "cool"
TRU has a sale every year, I think it's in August- Buy a backpack get a lunch box/bag free. This year I bought 2 sets. They were only $15 for both. They were the soft insulated zipper lunch bags. They are not great quality so you need two, plus spills.
I also bought a go green lunch box. It cuts down on waste and holds a lot of food.
This year I'm going with Lands End because they are better quality. I'm hoping my son will be okay with not getting a character bag now that he's older.

Both my kids have been using the soft insulated Lands End lunch bags that match their backpacks for the past 2-3 years and they will be using them again next year with no issues at all.

Same here and those things take a beating, let me tell you, but look good as new. I just wash it every few months.
The character lunch boxes and backpacks get destroyed really fast. My son's friend went through 3 in the past 2 years, and he is not any harder on them than your average 7 year old.

Re: Lunchbox/Lunch bag - What's "cool"
Because of this post I decided to check out Lands End and thought I would pass along to the OP that they are running a promotion today for 25%off regularly priced items (lunchboxes being one of them) plus free shipping over $50
I just ordered DS#1 a new school bag and matching lunchbox for first grade!

OK, I lied. I don't order from Land's End. I get LL Bean's Orginal Junior Backpacks. LL Bean Junior Backpack
I LOVE that they are slightly smaller than the regular sized one and more comfortable for their small backs, but everything still fits in there perfectly.

DH's 2 sons have this as well. the 1st grader has disneys cars and the 3rd grader has transformers

DS picked Sponge Bob. It held up great, after I wash it you wouldn't even know he has been using it all year. (Same for his Toy Story back pack)
