Just Kids School - lindenhurst

We are the parents of a 4 year old boy who is currently receiving speech and OT services. At our most recent meeting with the district they recommended that our son move into a 15:1:2 integrated setting for pre-school next year. He has some speech and OT issues, but has made tremendous progress over the last year. Mostly, we want to see him continue to develop his social/play skills.

One of the schools that was recommended was Just Kids, which we visited and liked a great deal. But then we were told it has received "mixed reviews," but no one could give us a specific criticism.

Does anyone have any positive or negative feedback they can give us on this school?

Thanks

Re: Just Kids School - lindenhurst

Dd went there for two years, and I hope my other dd gets in this year. She's currently wait listed. We got in through te district UPK program so the classes were mixed (half regular Ed and half special Ed).

Pros:
-the education was excellent as we're the teachers. Dd was totally prepared for kindergarten.
- I LOVED the integrated classroom. Fantastic that she learned that there are all kinds of people in the world, how to get along with everyone. I wrote a long post about it last year, I will try to find it for you.

Cons:
-parking is HORRIFIC. An absolute nightmare. You either have to park far away and walk (that's what I do) or deal with trying to get into the lot and have people screaming at you and buses honking. Horrible.
- SOME of the parents you will encounter are.... For lack of a more appropriate word, are kinda trashy. I definitely found myself rolling my eyes (internally, of course) at some of the people I found myself waiting with at dismissal time.
-there was a time or two that I felt behavioral issues were not dealt with properly in the classroom. However, the teachers always made time to explain to me why something was done a Certain way or what would be done differently in the future.

Here's the post:

Thanks - that is so helpful. Does anyone else have any feedback? We had a really tough experience with our little guy this year and want to make sure he has a better fit for school next year. Our other options are the Mill Neck Early Childhood center at Oyster Bay babies, Variety and Brookville Center at Marcus Ave (which we visited and didn't really feel like a school).

Re: Just Kids School - lindenhurst

My son went there ( today's his last day) from2.5 ( through EI) till now 5 ...graduated pre school in a half day integrated class.

He recieved Speech and O/T.

I have mixed opinions on it. EI there was 'ok'. The 3 yr old yr, we LOVED the teachers, LOVED...LOVED and the progress he made was AMAZING.

This year...eh...so so. I was not a fan of the classroom or the teachers, and I felt like my concerns were not addressed. Some of my concerns in the end were unfounded, and just me being overly protective.

I did not sign my almost 3 yr olds up for there.

I felt the Speech and o/t were so so. They have resources but IDK, I just am not easily impressed, and thats where I stood with this.

I cannot pin point anything 'bad'. Just a gut feeling.

I have to be honest, this is kinda gosspy I guess, I hate that the teachers/staff are so...IDK...unprofessional. The assistants have 3 inch fake nails, wear pajamas and just no one appears professional there. IDK know why the parents ( as the last poster mentioned) are that way as well. Its not a bad area or anything.

The parking BLOWS so bad like someone else said, BUT if your childs going through the district, they will get the bus.

Wish I could pinpoint better my feelings, so hope that helped a little.

Re: Just Kids School - lindenhurst

My older DD went there. While we loved the school and the teachers there was just too much clickiness and parents with behavioral issues. That was the con for us. but honestly, we've looked into other schools and the way they do it at Just Kids seemed to work the best in my opinion.

I do have friends who won't send their kids there because of how open it is there with the special needs kids. Me personally I don't see a problem with doing OT in the hallway where the child gets to interact with other people. I think some have issues with it in general and just don't want to see that in the school.

I would send my younger DD's there if we didn't move out of that area.

This is all so helpful - please keep the thread going. Does anyone have an opinion on the Brookville Center at Marcus Avenue? We visited and they seemed nice, but it just didn't feel like a school. The office setting was just a little much. What about ACDS? The name scares us.

My DD went there also and received speech and OT. I feel exactly the same way as pp.

I recently brought DD to a class and Variety in Syosset and was very impressed with that school.
