4th and 5th grade teachers

I am going to be given a classroom next year of emotionally disturbed/conduct disordered 4th and 5th graders. Since I was always called for them in district, and I am also a special ed teacher, they want to try to see if maybe if I just had them all day, I could whip them into shape! I am very excited, but being a planning and control freak, I hate starting from scratch and not knowing what to expect. This is a brand new program as well - so I am paving the way for this program moving forward....

Behaviorally speaking, I am good to go.

Now, I just need to "build" up a classroom from scratch... so, share with me your wish list for what you think is crucial for starting up a new class - specifically the "fun" stuff - books, games, etc... specific books, and games...

Also, what are also some personal things you discovered were helpful in your class - example - I have a teacher who doesn't use seperate notebooks and folders per subject - every kid gets an expandable file - she feels it is easier to transport back and forth from home to school, and there are no forgotten folders or notebooks. I liked that!

I am working with a lot of amazing teachers in my district who are sharing lots of great ideas with me. However, I am a researcher by nature, so I am always reaching out and asking around for everyone's ideas....

Thanks!!! Chat Icon

Re: 4th and 5th grade teachers

I just had a pd on crisis intervention and a big part was glasser's Choice Theory. Maybe read up on that.

Also, responsive classroom. It is backed by research and helps build community within your classroom.

I just finished reading Dr. Greene's Lost at School about collaborative problem solving and see the benefits of that model with behavior management...worth reading

Re: 4th and 5th grade teachers

Thanks!

I should clarify....

What books should I have for them? For their library?

I already am planning on developing a positive behavior support class. I am a BCBA (board certified behavior analyst) and am the district behavior specialist, so they put me in this class because I have the behavior stuff down...

I realized, though, that because I have been so focused on behavior for 12 years, and worked with so many kids cognitively lower than their age, I don't have a good idea of what 4th grade boys may be into in terms of reading!

I intend on incorporating a lot of these strategies. Anything backed by research is important. We are also getting a new psychologist who is going for his BCBA, and will be attached to is program. Thank you so much!!!!

Any good books or resources you know on responsive classroom? Besides their website?

If you go to Amazon and type in morning meeting the first two books I have used. I think the title is Morning Meeting and 99 activities and greetings.

My fourth grade boys with varying abilities love all of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books. They even enjoy writing in the one that is a create your own diary type book. They also still enjoy the magic treehouse, Stink, Boxcar children. As far as F&P goes they read about a level m to v.

Off the top of my head some books we have read:
Skinny bones, Tales of a Fourth grade Nothing, and Hank Zipper, Stone Fox, Winn Dixie, Letters to Mrs. Rue, Ali baba bernstein.

Good luck with that one. It sounds like you will have your hands full.

With my fifth graders, I read Holes and Maniac Magee, two great books in my opinion. Dear Mr Henshaw and Teacher's Pet were pretty good too, but could get boring. My fifth graders loved listening to Harry Potter book and then we watched the movie. (I taught fifth grade when it first came out)

Class President might be a good book to start out with because of the elections in NOvember.

thanks! I essentially have to recreate a cooperative discipline model. We will have a redirection room because of how destructive and aggressive they can get. Hope I can even get to books like this!

not sure if this will post, but here is the list I made for our SPED dept (we don't have students @ every F&P, but there are plenty of books to fill the gap) - some levels are specific to girls/boys or both picture and chapter books. (A great series for boys in P is Time Warp Trio. If you can get to TC in November, Jon Scieszka is presenting about getting boys to read. I'm struggling to decide between that TC workshop and another)

How about non-fiction "browsing" books, like the way it works atlases, Guiness book of world records, Star Wars visual dictionaries, etc.? There's even a batch of Lego books that are just showing up on the market.

Yes! I was thinking more non fiction things - the Guiness books might be a good idea!

Erica - that is an amazing list!!! Thank you so much for sharing!!!

I thought I added this yesterday Chat Icon

going off with the Guinness theme...

* How *** Is It series - Bill Hillard
* Would you rather series - Justin Heimberg
* Is it a fact series - lerner publication

Titlewave by Follett is a great resource. an account is free and you can search so many different ways for books.

I know I already mentioned Scieszca, but he really is the boy's voice. He compiled short stories "guys read" Its 6-7 grade level, but you might like to read some to them. they are just true boy stories - like peeing on an electric fence.

jack gantos also has a great boy voice and is funny.

gary schmidt is more serious, might be good for them (abusive father etc)

jerry spinelli, gary paulsen, richard peck, christopher paul curtis, avi, roald dahl, gordon korman, jeff kinney, dan gutman are great boy authors.
