Highlights?

I know it's hard to predict because I think it's one of those things that you won't know until you're there - much like my thoughts with a 4 eyar old that "I'll never let you go to anyone else's house without me"Chat Icon

But I'm curious with this because I saw a 10 year old with a full head of highlights.

At what age would you allow your daughter to get highlights?

perm?

straightening?

color their hair?

Re: Highlights?

I don't know if I have a "moral" problem with highlights. It's not like wearing overly mature clothes for their age... I don't feel it sexualizes young girls.

Honestly I am pretty frugal and my biggest issue would be starting such an expensive habit that requires upkeep at such a young age. When you're 10 yrs old and spending hundreds per year on your hair, where do you go from there????

I'm not sure exactly what age I'd allow it (my DD is years away from this sort of thing) but I think I would require DD to be contributing some of her own money to these highlights, and she would NOT be getting them touched up the minute the roots were showing, kwim?

edited for typos...

When she can use her own money she can do it.

I really don't see the need for a child to do that.

Re: Highlights?

My mom never let me dye my hair, get a perm, or get hi-lights. Her motto was if I can pay for it myself then I could go do it once I was out of her house. I still have never treated my hair.....I am going to keep the same motto for DD. With that said, I do take her to my hair dresser for a hair cut.

Right now, I'm thinking the same thing. I don't have a problem with it, but I don't see it as necessary, but if DD wants to do it, she can pay for it.

Re: Highlights?

Maybe 16? It causes a lot of damage to your hair. This coming from a girl who started getting perms at 12. So, I honestly don't know. DD's hair is so shiny and dark I hope she never gets highlights!

Re: Highlights?

I have curly hair, so does DD. I really want her to hold off on getting any type of treatments. I started getting them at 14, 9th grade. I've done them all and they've damaged my hair a lot. I feel the same way about coloring/highlights.

I want DD to hold off until at least 14. I think if I care for it really well (lots of conditioning, letting it grow, etc...) she will be less inclined to mess with it.

Re: Highlights?

My mom let me first highlight my hair at 14 after lots and lots of begging. I did work, but she paid.

By 15-16 I was buying hair dye at CVS and doing it myself....

I think 15 is a fair age and I rather take her to a salon and have it professionally done then to go over her friend's house and come home with self dyed hair in god knows what color/shade. This way I can control it somewhat and know it was done properly.

Re: Highlights?

I honestly don't know how I feel about it.

I couldn't see myself allowing PERMANENT color before they are old enough to pay for it - but that's me. My mother didnt allow me to color my hair until I was old enough to pay for it. Even then she was FIRMLY against it. She felt that encouraging me to try to alter my natural hair color was in essence telling me that *I* wasn't good enough as I was.

I will say that Noah has had Kool Aid coloring done on his hair when he had a mohawk. He wanted it, it was safe and he looked cute. We treated it as though it were more of a 'costume' than anything.. a fun change to the already gorgeous person that he was and something that would wash out fast so he could easily have his own look back.

Re: Highlights?

Last time I got my hair done, there was a 12 year old girl who was getting 2-3 highlights in her hair. She was on HER phone with her friends and the way she was talking was way over her age. Then her mom also let her get her eye brows waxed. She was such a pretty girl. But a B I T CH on wheels. Yelling at her mom to get her a new mag, a drink, really RUDE to her mom.

She was also there with her 10 1/2 year old sister who was not allowed to get highlights but was almost "pressured" to get her eye brows done too.

I think kids grow up fast enough and then with things that just happen, life, they grow up even faster. Why push it?

Re: Highlights?

Growing up I think I had my first perm in 3rd grade.

My DD who is now 11 has only gotten a streak or two of splashy color put in her hair. We only do the semi-permanent one that washes out in 3-4 weeks.

I would let her get her hair hilighted if she wanted to but she likes her hair the way it is and her natural highlights.

My thoughts on hair is, it grows back and can be fixed. I was always one to experiment with colors, cuts, etc.

I'd rather my DD have hilights in her hair then wear makeup like some of the girls in her class do.
