Re: gps watch?
I don't think you NEED one.
I have one and I LOVE it for outdoor runs! It helps me pace myself because I can check every now and again to see what pace I'm running which is difficult for me to figure out otherwise. I have a tendency to go too fast and crap out otherwise.
On the other hand...I bought DH the same exact gps watch when he started running and he HATES it! He used it twice and he says that his runs seem longer because he keeps checking his watch to see how far he has gone.
So there are two very different points of view on the very same watch!

Re: gps watch?
Garmin 210. Hands down. $200.
Its the most feminine one I've seen (I have it in black but they have cute colors) and its not bulky. It does the job!

Re: gps watch?
Do you need one? Definitely not. That being said, I love mine, and don't think I could go back to running without it. I have the Garmin Forerunner 205. It is their cheapest model (I got it for $88 on black Friday one year). It is definitely bulky, but I am used to it and it gets the job done.

I have the Garmin 110 - it was around 150 on amazon, its not that bulky. I would say after having it, I couldn't go back to running without it. Its helped me with my pace so much.

Re: gps watch?
I have the Garmin 305 and yes, it's huge. However, it really doesn't bother me that much and I'm a very petite gal (4'10").
I got that model b/c I wanted to be able to do things like interval workouts and some of the less bulky models don't have all those features.
I love mine. I'm obsessed with stats and having an accurate record of my workouts.
However, like a pp, my DH had the 405 and hated it. He got depressed when he wasn't running well, found all the beeping a distraction and just didn't like it. He runs without any watch at all now which I think is crazy!
So, in sum, no they are absolutely not necessary. But depending on what kind of runner you are, you may find it a very useful training tool.
I should also mention I used to have a Timex non-GPS watch and thought it was great for courses where I knew the distance. So when I used to live in Manhattan and ran in Central Park all the time the Timex did the job b/c I knew the mileage. After I moved out here I wanted GPS so I could run different courses, but still know how long they are. So depending on where you run a non-GPS watch might be sufficient.

I also have a new version of the garmin but i haven't used it much. i love the big display on the older model much better.

Re: gps watch?
What are the advantages of running with the gps watch in comparison to using an Iphone app like MayMyRun or RunKeeper? Just curious - my birthday is coming up and i'm debating asking for a GPS watch :)

well, i have an iphone and was using a few different apps, but i never felt that they were totally accurate. I did the half in May and used the runkeeper app. I had used it all throughout my training but it was off the day of the race. I thought it was pretty accurate but I guess not. I have done two half marathons and I'm signed up to do my third in october. I want to train a little better this time and want to drop my time under 2 hours. I'm thinking about going to a running store and asking for their advice on gps watches
