I could see that about Lord of the Rings- it definitely dragged in some parts. And were the 4 page long songs necessary? 
I can't even bring myself to start the Lord of the Rings books (because I hated The Hobbit so much)... but I adore the movies.
Same with Game of Thrones - love the series, I'm told I'll love the books... but can't bring myself to start them... I'm afraid I'll hate it.
Game of Thrones is a far cry from Lord of the Rings. I think it's just written differently. The language isn't nearly so hard to follow as LOTR. There's only a few phrases that they really use that take some getting used to, and I kinda like the phrases.  Like instead of saying "Go to hell" they say "Oh, the others take ya!" Or instead of "eff yourself" it's "bugger yourself" which I like and I find myself USING. lol!
Also, it's R-rated rather than PG-rated like LOTR. Since they curse and drink and whore their way around the realm, I find it's a little more interesting.

Also as someone else mentioned, The Lovely Bones! Started this book expecting a lot because it's been so hyped, with the movie & all coming out, but I really didn't care for it.

50 Shades, stupid and unrealistic. I prefer my porno visual thankyouverymuch.
I never even attempted twilight, harry potter and the like bc I feel I wouldn't like them, though I LOVED Hunger Games and thought I wouldn't so maybe I'm wrong.

Twilight... 50 Shades is Twilight fanfic, so you will probably not like it. it was a guilty pleasure for me. All of my students were obsessed with it, so I red it.
I think if you liked Hunger games you might like Harry Potter. The first book is the most juveline but then they do really get into overarching themes of good and evil and they start to get VERY dark. it's a very absorbing world like Hunger Games..moreso in my opinon since Rowling is really fantastic at setting a scene
I heard about E, P,L from a friend and i really think I would hate that selfihs B

No desire for 50 shades--read a sample online and have heard some excerpts
Somewhat the Outlander series--i am liking the second book more than the first. at least, I actually enjoy the characters now and am interested, but I find there to be too much detail and I get bored

What's a popular book you did NOT like?
The Grapes of Wrath. I had to read it in high school and ended up buying the Cliff's Notes. I tried to re-read it again a couple of years ago figuring I'd like it as an adult - I still hated it.
Also - The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand. Couldn't get through the Fountainhead at all. I made it through Atlas Shrugged but had to literally force myself to read it.

HATED Twilight like no other book i've ever read
Read The Hobbit and thought it draaaagged on and on, but when i saw LOTR movies, absolutely loved them.
Read excerpts of 50 Shades, thought it was just like Twilight  but didn't read enough to say i hated it 
There have been plenty of others, but not really memorable enough to make me remember them!

Lovely Bones
I liked the first Twilight, but it all went way downhill from there. I hated the 4th book but forced myself to finish just so I could see how it all ended up.
I tend to dislike most classic books you are forced to read in high school- Catcher in the Rye in particular.
