Do teachers/school employees qualify for these discounts? We are in the NYS retirement system.

You usually need a government issued ID to qualify for that discount. A few years ago our health insurance cards from Empire said 'NY government Employee' and I booked a room at the Marriot with the govt. discount. They honored the rate but told me the ID was not valid and they were doing me a big favor. Those discounts are excellent!

If you log onto the NYSUT website, there is a travel section. I found the discounts there to be really good. I booked a 3 night (weekend nights) stay at a Marriott 4 blocks from the White House for a DC trip this summer. They have a ton of hotels in a bunch of cities, plus international and all-inclusives.

I have tried to get this discount at hotels. They usually tell me they aren't supposed to do it. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. Sometimes if you book it online as such they won't check, sometimes they do. This probably wasn't helpful but that is my experience.

I thought I could show my school ID. School Boards are elected...does that make it a government agency
Thanks for the NYSUT info. I already booked (regular rate), but they were only $3 less a night and I got a package where my kids get $10 gift cards, so I still may have gotten the better deal
