When to apply?

I am somewhat happy where I am and been here many years but ..its not perfect and a bit far now that I have a baby. So I have been thinking about making a move soon.

I am interested in other agencies in my field but they are not currently hiring for my position or related area. Do I apply now with a letter requesting they consider me for the future should an appropriate opening become available or keep looking until something is actually posted?

I am also worried that one agency would talk to another when I apply. I am one of few in my agency and somewhat well known because of the work I do. If someone from one agency sees my resume, it would be so easy for them to say to my agency...so soandso is looking..or applied.. or.. I guess its my only option to take that chance though...Chat Icon

I wouldn't necessarily think someone will tell your agency if you are looking. Especially if they know you and your work, and you could be an asset for them.

Also, is there something you have signed at current place of business about going to work for a competitor? I don't know how easy these are to enforce, but I have signed it at mine and wouldn't want to pi$$ them off, because of potential consequences KWIM?

Speaking as a mother of a young child too, especially if you are decently happy, I would be careful going somewhere new.

Job security is EVERYTHING in today's economy.

There are several things I don't like about my agency, however, the fact that I have a ton of flexibility and can work from anywhere if I want, is something I personally am not ready to give up, at least until DS is settled in school.

Unless I were to get a job in a certain place I have my eye on, I would stay put, and even then...........it would probably be a tough decision because of the flexibiity factor I have with my current employer.
