Question about buying gifts cheap (like at the Target sale) and giving with no receipts.

Yesterday I found some good deals and I wanted to buy for some birthdays coming up but I felt funny bc they were so cheap. Do you buy enough stuff to match the dollar amount would have spent? Or do you just say well it's nobody's business that I got a great deal and give no receipt? My ds is very young so we mostly go to family parties and I generally ask the mom what character or whatever their kid is into and I buy a more personalized gift that way- but I know he will probably be invited to some school parties this year and I could probably use some more "generic" gifts. Do people give just random toys for school parties? Just guessing if the kid might like that type of gift or character, etc?

Eta Will people think I'm regifting?

If it's a close friend or family member, I would buy a little something extra if I got a really good deal. For school parties, I wouldn't.

I usually spend around 20-25 on ds school parties/friends and a little more on close friends. If I get something on sale, I just buy more until I get to that amount.

I go on the value of the item. I spend about $25 for bday gifts, and if I get a $25 toy 70% off, I don't buy anything else. Oh, and I don't typically give gift receipts on things, and we never get them from other people either, other than grandparents.

I think for cool friends as long as the value is what you would normally spend, then I think it's fine. For family or clse frids I would buy mre.

And do you guys put the gift receipts? I mean, sometimes they wouldn't even matter though bc too old. The people know then that you didn't shop for "them". I just always have this thought in my head that gifts with no receipts are likely regifts (especially if we have kids the same age/gender)

I go by the value of the item, not how much I spend. Often I end up giving a more expensive (value) gift than I would have. Like if I get a $50 lego set for $19.99 I just give that. I also have given a $25 (value) gift that I have gotten for $3.

Really? We rarely get gift receipts, and the thought never crossed my mind that it was a re-gift.

I think it's ok for the preschool-classmate-your-kid-never-even-talks-about kind of party, kwim? You don't know the kid, your child isn't even "friends" with them, they're just in the same class-- I think one of these heavily discounted toys without a gift receipt is acceptable. Truthfully, when I receive something random like this and there's no gift receipt, I assume it was something pulled from a person's gift stash in their closet, but to me there's nothing wrong with that. It's the downside of the whole "having to invite the whole class" aspect of preschool parties.... you're inviting, and getting gifts from, people you barely know.

I wouldn't do it for one of my kid's close friends or a family member though, unless the gift happened to be related to something you knew the child loves (like Transformers or something)

Not always- sorry, that was a stupid word choice- i think It's actually that *I* am always paranoid that other people who I gave a "gift closet" gift to are going to think it's a regift. Every now and then though I do suspect that I've received a regift and no receipt is definitely a tip-off- but not always.

I always 100% include gift receipts and am usually annoyed when they aren't included in gifts we receive. I would never judge how much the person spent but I want to be able to return/exchange if necessary.

See if you never did a regift you probably would not even think about it. If you have done it before that is where the paranoid feeling comes from. I personally do not regift, I am not sure why it just doesn't sit well with me... I would be afraid to get caught.

i bought a handful of toys during that Target sale to potentially give to DDs classmates at school if she's invited to a party. IN this case, I go by the value. For family and close friends I spend XX amount regardless.

i agree. its important to me that the person i am buying for -no matter who it is- gets what they want so i always include a gift receipt.
