Backpacks -- how often?

Do you get DC a new one each year?

No. I find Lands End and LL Bean hold up the longest. My kids pre-K backpack bought 2 years ago is still in good shape, they just needed a bigger one this year.

I won't buy character back packs for a few reasons. Mainly being, their tastes change and they no longer want to wear a perfectly good back pack. We've been using the same bento box for lunch for the past 4 years.

No. DS's backpack from last year is still in great shape so he will use it again. He also really loves it because its a MET backpack.

We get a new one every year, not so much that I think she needs it, its just kinda like a ritual for us. New year, new teacher, new experiences, new backpack.

I agree with this.

We have the LandsEnd one from 2 years but it's finally getting thread it so it's getting returned for a new one.

This is kind of how I feel...like it is part of her school "supplies" and new clothes. I guess I'm just a shopping addict!! Any excuse to buy something new...

I did buy this year from Lands End, so maybe we'll get a second year out of it!

Noah has had the same backpack since 1st grade (he will be in 4th). Robbie is MUCH harder on backpacks and also is weak to fashion so he gets one every year.

Same. They love getting new ones!! Plus, they're what...$18? It fits into my back-to-school budget. We have a couple of left-over ones for sleepovers, etc and their pre-school has a used backpack drive to which we donated the extra.

Re: Backpacks -- how often?

I think that backpacks should last a few years. I got Emily a very nice one from Garnet Hill last year, had it monogrammed and everything, and now she wants a new one! Her friends all have character ones ---iCarly, victorious, etc and she wants one like that, but I think she should be fine with the one we got last year.

It's an argument!

I will get a new one every year. Their tastes change, they get dirty etc. When I was young everyone got a new backpack every year. We used to get the LL Beans ones but it was something I remember everyone showing their new backpacks off. It is kind of a new year ritual.

Re: Backpacks -- how often?

I got DS a cars back pack last year and it has lasted so far, so if it lasts through the final week of camp I am not getting him a new one for kindergarten. It looks almost brand new. I still have to get him a lunch box. I am going to get an LL Bean one that I hope will last a while.

I got one for DD from Garnet Hill last year too, and while it lasted the year, it definately needs replacing. The bottom is showing signs of wear and has small wear holes in it. The lumchbox is still perfect though, so I chose a solid color from Lands End that will coordinate with her lunchbox and that's what she'll use.

I'll see where we stand next year!

Re: Backpacks -- how often?

Yes at the young elementary school age they want te character backpacks, they are cheap so I don't mind. When DS is older and just want a plain backpack I'll invest in a good one that will hopefully last that he wants

DS is going into 3rd and will be using the one he got from Lands End for 1st grade. HE'd be using his pre-K bag, but it was too small.

Same for DD. She has a Lands End backpack and this is her second year with it.

Each of my kids will get at the very least 3 years use of them. The only reason I would get new is for a bigger size.

My boys like the character ones and so I like getting them a new one each year. In preschool it wasn't really necessary because they stayed in good condition so it was more I wanted them to have a new one. InK-1 grade - they did get old and grubby and thin by the end of the year.

DS#1 has had his LE bag for 2 years - I was planning on using it again this year, but maybe I should get him a new one, his looks beat up.

DS#2 has had his LE bag for one year and it looks great still.

Re: Backpacks -- how often?

Most of the time we get a new one since the old ones, no matter what get all beat up between the bus and everything.

The 1 year I said we could re-use it I wound up buying a new one mid year because the other one broke.

Re: Backpacks -- how often?

So funny, because I was so excited to buy DS (5, starting K) a new backpack and matching lunch box. He wants to use the same Land's End backpack he's been using for the past two years in pre-k. I guess it's a comfort thing. It's in perfectly good shape, I just thought he'd want a new one.

This is exactly why I ordered the reg sized back pack for T from LL BEAN!
