Re: school nurse
I'm not a nurse, but I am a HS teacher at a Nassau HS. I can tell you that the school nurses at the school that I work at absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE it! One of the nurses left the hospital over 15 years ago and wouldn't consider going back at all! The other nurse left a nursing home setting around the same time. The two of them met at my school and have been best friends ever since! They are wonderful with the kids and the kids love them. Both ladies said that although they loved the setting that they left, they definitely love the setting they are in so much more. It gave them time with their own kids since they were on a similar schedule and they could always pick up summer school in the summer if needed. It's not fast paced at all, but it's something that is very satisfying especially when they see the kids start out in school and then graduate...it's at least 4 years with the same patients LOL! They love getting to know the families as well. I can sit and talk to them for hours...they are just the best...warm, friendly, bubbly, knowledgable...I can't say enough about these two ladies!
We've had some substitute nurses and they were awful. It takes a really patient, yet strong person to work with kids especailly since most kids use the nurse as a way of getting out of work or a way of getting out of the heat and into the AC, and the subs definitely weren't at all.

school nurse
I think it's a great job schedule wise, especially if you have children, but they pay is not comparable to what you would get in the hospital or home are setting. My mom was a school Nurse when my sister and I were in elementary/middle school but wasn't paid well. She was however in the nys retirement system. I am now a teacher and we have a wonderful school nurse, but again the pay is not wonderful. She is eligible to do supervisions and clubs after school hours to improve her pay.

Same My mom was also a school nurse for a year when my brother and I were younger and in school. The pay wasn't great so she went back to a hospital setting and then into nursing admin. since she didn't want to be on the floor anymore. She now supervises visiting nurses and sets them up with people who need services. Maybe a job like that would be more lucrative than a school nurse, unless you want a school schedule.

Re: school nurse
Hmm, this was something I was thinking about as well...does anyone have any idea what they pay? I would take less than a hospital nurse for the schedule for sure...

Re: school nurse
I have heard that per diem school nurses earn slightly better pay but the work isn't steady. I remember a few years ago some nurses I know signing up with an agency that offered per diem hours. At the time they were more lenient but many places now want a few years of ER or other acute care peds experience. (I personally agree with this) I have also heard that in some districts they are hiring NP's now to cover a few schools at a time as a replacement for a school nurse.
Nobody takes a school nurse job to earn a living, it's the pace and the hours.

Maybe the pay was higher for them since it was through an agency (and agencies, in general) tend to pay much higher? because most listings i've seen pay per diems $100-$125/day.
to the OP- here's a good site for checking postings- sometimes they'll post the salary. Or, you could just look at some school's web sites in your area, look up their school nurse, and then put their name into seethroughny.org to see what their salary is. School nurse listings
If you really love kids and school and all that stuff and just want to be a school nurse, then i think you'd need to come to terms with the salary being what it is, but if it's just that you hate the hospital and you're looking for an out- i would advise to really research all of your options. There's so many different areas that you can go into that have a better schedule, similar pay and a better quality of life.
