Am I the only one who feels like this?
I think it should be a law that you have to spay/neuter your animal unless you are a licensed breeder. There are too many dogs and cats out there already and so many get euthanized because of over population. I know animals are just considered possessions by the law but it's really getting out of hand. I had a fight with dh's sister because she bred her dog to make money and I think that's despicable but again that's jmo.

Re: Am I the only one who feels like this?
I understand your point but this would be very hard to enforce. And the reality is that anyone who is allowing their pets to get pregnant, probably isn't someone who routinely takes their pet for check ups, etc. And the only way this could be enforced was tracking of animals through a vet's office, since many people don't even register their pets with the town they live in.

My female dog is not spayed. We did not have the money at the time. But i do agree with you about breeding. I would NEVER allow my dog to be in the position to breed. I think its disgusting to breed for money. Its basically making you a pimp. I live my dog like my child and would never force my child to have babies.

absolutely! I can not stand to read about old friends breeding dogs! There are SO many dogs, why do you have to breed them. I also hate when "accidents" happen! Seriously! As soon as my move is complete Ill be looking to a male kitten to my home. I wish I could do more but 4 will be enough!

Not knocking you at all, but you do have to realize, god forbid your dog ever got out. They can get pregnant immediately, esp if they are not fixed and seeking a mate.
I know b/c this happened to my cat growing up. Got out and got pg. Had a litter, we were going to get her fixed and she got out again and got pg AGAIN. Within minutes, i swear to you (blame my mom, people...I was 8). Then she finally got fixed for good after the second time.
Just wanted to make you think about that in case you did not think it could happen that easily.

thanks. i have def thought of that. right now in all seriousness, there is NO way she would get out. we live in an aprtment and walk her daily. we have no yard. i do see where you are coming from. I would love to do it now, get her spayed. I am a little nervous as to if it will "change" her or her tempermant. she is a 4 year old pit. she is phenomonal with my 2 dc. my 3 year old puts her through the ringer and she grins and bears it. please, if you have any info, let me know how it will affect her.

I really can't answer that, I don't know. I only can honestly tell you fixing my male and female dogs did not do a THING to their temperment or energy level.

At the animal shelter where we got our dog years ago, all animals that they adopted out had to be spayed or neutered.

ITA. We didn't anticipate adopting a second dog, we found her. So at the time, we didn't have the money to have her spayed. Though, now with how readily available low cost spaying/neutering is becoming, that's becoming less and less of an excuse. We just had Lucy spayed through Project PIT and I'd highly recommend it to anyone- you could tell that all the volunteers really loved dogs and had a special place in their hearts for pits in particular.

Lucy had 3 heat cycles (we actually had to cancel one spaying appointment because she went into heat) since we had her. They would be about every 8 months and there was VERY little blood. I read a lot about dogs and heat cycles and they don't get a period like a human female would. They don't go into heat to shed their uterine lining like humans do, so there's no cramping and little blood.

I wanted to throw out there that a cat getting out and getting pregnant is a FAR cry from a dog getting out and getting pregnant, particularly a large dog like a pit bull. Think about a cat sneaking between your legs to get out the door and then trade that in for 85 lbs. of muscle. I don't think it's necessarily fair to compare the two.
But to myboysmyheart, definitely look into Operation PIT! I couldn't have been happier with everyone there and it really did NOT change her personality/temperment at all. She was just as crazy as she ever was the very next day after the surgery. In fact, she was even crazier with her cone! Plus, it was an entirely FREE service. If you want anymore info, please feel free to FM me! I'd be happy to share!

LOL
I didn't know what kind of dog she had when I first said that. Wasn't sure if it was a tiny dog or a big dog. Regardless, things can happen and that was my only point about spaying.

My dog, a girl golden, is not fixed yet.
I am debating doing it, because I was informed of the risks with fixing a golden retriever, and I am not sure if I am willing to take a chance.
I feel fixing animals is against nature, but I understand it is a necessary at times.
I'm not against people breeding responsibly, either. Breeding (responsibly) is a wonderful thing to bring in a beautiful animal into the world. I have my golden from a reputable breeder and the love she has shown to our family is out of this world.

Oh, trust me, I get it! I just had this funny vision of my 85 lb. pit trying to sneak past me to get out the front door.

I don't have a dog, but shouldn't all female dogs be spayed because when they get a bit older they can develop (I guess it's common) uterus issues? I forgot the medical term...
I heard this is true.

I think it's healthier for both male and female dogs, reducing their risk of cancer. At least that's what I've always understood.
