Do I "have" to give a gift?

Do I "have" to give a gift?

A little less than 2 years ago our then new next-door neighbors (they had lived there about 7 months) invited us to their baby shower. They had it at home. We hadn't seen them much and never more than "hi" and "bye" and thought the invite was odd but decided to attend and give a nice gift to be neighborly.

Fast-forward to now and the woman is pregnant again and the husband himself is throwing another baby shower for themselves, at home again. It's been a little less than 2 years since the last one. Saw husband outside last week and he invited us.

Now, I already have a problem with the fact that they are having a 2nd baby shower and it's been less than 2 years since DC#1. But, that's just my personal opinion, kwim. My real issue with the invite is that we never see these neighbors (an occasional hello at MOST 1 x month) and they aren't particularly neighborly. In fact, they put up a big white privacy fence between our 2 yards. But we never saw them before that either.

I definitely without a doubt will not attend. But, do I have to give a gift? Now, I don't really want to give a gift but feel sort of weird about it. Is it one of those things were I should/have to give a gift bc it's the right thing to do since a shower is really an event held to celebrate and honestly receive gifts? Just not sure what to do and looking for opinions.

I wouldn't give a gift, based on the way you describe the relationship.

Maybe give a token gift once the baby is born? Or make them a meal once the baby is born.

Even before the invite I had mentioned to DH that we should give them something small when the baby is born. Not because I like them but we live in a great neighborhood and a couple of our neighbors brought over baby gifts when my DS was born even though we'd lived there only 4 months so I figured I'd sort of pay forward, kwim.

I just feel so awkward about it all. Like, the next time I see them the baby shower will be this unspoken thing. arrghhh!

depends ... if not giving a gift would make it awkward when you see them again, maybe you could just give a very small gift (like an outfit or two).

if not giving a gift wouldn't affect anything, then don't

I would send a congratulations card when the baby is born. That's it. I think it's weird that they invited you though you aren't close at all and second baby showers are a pet peeve of mine too.

Agreed. You could even spend under $10 on just an outfit or small toy.
