Anyone else's Dr doesn't want them to go past 40 weeks?

Saw my Dr and he doesn't like to let his patients go past the 40 week mark anymore. This is news to me because I always thought they would let you go 2 weeks past your date. I am 39 weeks and nothing is going on at all. This is baby #3 and I go back on Thursday to the on call Dr and my Dr said we would probably talk about an induction. I am so nervous to be induced. I have no health issues at all so I am not really into being induced if there is no medical need.

Thoughts?

IDK but this is definitely going on my list of questions for next week. I will not be a happy camper if my doc lets me go very far past my due date

I have heard that most drs. will not let you go past 41 weeks anymore, but 40 seems extreme. I would not be happy about that either, and although I know it is easier said than done to go against your dr.'s wishes, I'd really try to advocate for myself under those circumstances and tell them I am not willing to induce yet if it is not medically necessary.

my doc would only let me go 2-3 days past but that was due to clotting issues. I think otherwise with a normal pregnancy, he lets patients go 10 days.

My OB told me I would be able to go 1 week past my due date; that after that we'd have to discuss induction. She said there are too many risks with allowing me to go past 41weeks.

I could not go past 40 weeks +/- a day or so. I had clotting issues so that is why. I ended up going on my own at 37 weeks but anywhere between 37-42 weeks is considered safe.

My doc wouldn't let me go past 40 weeks but that was because of some health issues and because DS was huge. Never heard of that with no health issues or anything and would definitely question it.

Im in the same boat as you. 39w2d and nothings going on. OB wants me to come in next wk for another checkup (if i make it that long) and then we will discuss inducing. I really want to go naturally but he said he wont let me go past 41 wks.

That seems nuts to me. It seems like inducing at 41 weeks is pretty common and I'm surprised how often they are willing to do it before that. I would try to push for some more time if there is no medical need, with monitoring of course. I went on my own one day shy of a scheduled induction at 42 weeks. I'm sure it's not for everyone, but I'm so glad I got the chance to go on my own. Hopefully your doctor will at least be open to giving you a little more time. GL!

You are always allowed to refuse...assuming you and your baby are safe and healthy. Also, they can try more natural ways to induce like membrane stripping

Re: Anyone else's Dr doesn't want them to go past 40 weeks?

What's the rationale for not going past 40 weeks? Unless there's a medical reason, I think automatically inducing at 40 weeks is a little premature. My group will let me go to 42 weeks (assuming there's no health threat to the baby or mom).

Things like this totally freak me out - gestation times are approximate, it's not an exact science. I hope this isn't causing you too much stress at 39 weeks!!

it is perfectly normal to go up to 42 weeks in your pregnancy, barring any medical complications. i'm not quite sure why your doctor does not want you to go past 40 weeks, that seems very bizarre and i would seriously be questioning his ethics and practices.

My doctor was not going to let me go past 38 weeks if I was having a singleton due to past complications with first pregnancy, but now that I am haveing twins, I do not know what the goal is..praying i make it to 37-38wks..

His reasoning is that the placenta can stop functioning properly at any point after 40 weeks so he prefers not to go past the 40 week mark. I go back tomorrow to see if I have made any progress and to talk about my options. I just wish this baby would come out already. I am so done.

That can be checked with a sono and/or bloodwork.

FWIW, I was 1cm dilated and not showing any signs of progress until I went into labor at 39w4d. Good luck!

I was induced at 42 weeks, but after 41 weeks I was at the hospital every other day for monitoring (non-stress test and sono)

If you don't feel comfortable being induced, speak up for yourself. If the above tests are fine, there is no medical reason to induce. Your bun is still cooking!

ETA: There's a reason they're called ESTIMATED due dates. It's an estimate, not an exact science.

The placenta can stop working as effectively. If you decide to go past your due date definitely get testing done, and don't go past 41 weeks because you are riding a thin line of a healthy baby. I was induced by 40 weeks with all four of my kids. I've seen too many bad things happen to those wHo wait.. I know this might not be the answer you want but it's a different spin on it.

Re: Anyone else's Dr doesn't want them to go past 40 weeks?

My groups practice is to let you go to 41 weeks and at that point they schedule the induction for anywhere between 41-42 weeks depending on the scheduling, that is if there is no medical reason.

For me, they won't let me go past 40 weeks max, and prefer not past 39 weeks due to my medical issues. With my last DD I was induced at 38 weeks due to medical reasons and she was almost 9 lbs. i can't imagine how big she would have been if I went to 40 weeks or past that!

You can always refuse the inducation at 40 weeks and hope you go on your own. I would have a chat with your dr and see what the reasons are why they do not want you to go past 40 weeks and ask for an ultrasound to you know the size of the baby.
