Question about food portions....
So I just joined myfitnesspal and was wondering how you accurately measure your food? In particular oz of chicken...should I purchase a food scale?
I want to lose about 15-20lbs through portion control and exercise....
Thanks!

Re: Question about food portions....
I measure everything. I am a vegetarian so measuring most things with a measuring cups is pretty easy for me but i think a food scale is the best way to go

Re: Question about food portions....
I remember that WW says that a deck of cards is 6 oz. of meat, so I eyeball it if I eat meat and everything else, I just use a measuring cup.

I eyeball too. I just cannot get that involved with measuring everything.

Re: Question about food portions....
I have a food scale, and measuring cups -- I think the food scale is a good investment. Aside from weight loss, it's good to have if you bake often (more accurate to weight flour than scoop/measure).
I think it helps to measure in the beginning, if you are a weight loss newbie and have no sense of portion control. After awhile, you can start to eyeball portions based on your experience measuring.
Being able to estimate is a good skill, too, because it's not always feasible to measure/weight... like when you are out at a restaurant or friend's house. But I think "guesstimating" is better than nothing!
If I am home, I try to measure or weigh "high calorie" items -- meat, wine, nuts, cheese, ice cream. But I don't go crazy with items like fresh fruits and veggies. I just estimate and it's fine.

Re: Question about food portions....
When I was prepping/competing I measured and weighed out EVERYTHING---down to lettuce! At this point I can pretty much eye ball and estimate accurately so now that I am not competing, I can just kinda eat within an appropriate range of food. I would strongly suggest the scale though if you are trying to lose weight.

Question about food portions....
Thanks ladies! I went to BBB yesterday and got a food scale. WOW, I have only been measuring my portions for 2 days and it is really eye opening! I didn't really consider myself an overeater persae, however, I can already tell that I do not need second helpings of really anything if I make good choices to begin with.

I completely agree. Some of it was eye opening for me, in both directions.
I'll never forget the morning I measured out tablespoons of the half and half I put in my coffee and realized how much I DUMP into it.
I simplified it over time and do this:
Protein - palm sized portion Carbs - fist sized portion Veggies - two fist sized portions Fat - thumb sized portion
This is assuming that the carbs and fats are heathly. If I'm eating something bad - like french fries - I do a palm sized portion or less and don't go back for more.
