Do "Cash Only" businesses bother you?
Does it bother you when businesses are "Cash Only"? Is there even a reason for this aside from avoiding taxes?
It personally drives me nuts becuase I rarely carry more than a few dollars and I've been caught by surprise more than once. I even went to a pricy salon and was sent to hunt down an ATM when I didn't have over $200 cash to pay them. How do you feel about this?

Yes it bothers me- because I never carry any cash.
I think another reason would be they don't want to pay the fee to take credit cards.

I never carry cash either so I find it annoying. Often I end up paying an ATM fee. They don't want to pay the fees to take the cards. They probably quite often avoid taxes too

If they ask for cash only, then I ask if they will waive the tax for me. We all know they are doing it to avoid paying taxes, so why should I have to pay sales tax?

It doesn't bother me for certain places. My local bagel store and pizza parlor are cash only. I'm sure taking a hit from the credit cards fees isn't worth it to them, especially the bagel shop.
If a clothing store or salon did it, that would bother me. You are dealing in larger purchases, not a $1.50 bagel. KWIM?

It only bothers me if it's a salon. I hate carrying around so much cash!

It usually bothers me, but there are certain places I don't mind, like the flea market where they don't charge tax if you use cash.

Accepting credit cards isn't cheap. I don't blame businesses one bit for doing cash only. I think it's not a fabulous draw and they probably lose some business because of it.. but that's life!

ITA...there is a 1-2% charge on every CC transaction that the business pays.
Ideally, I would like to see discounts for cash instead.

cash only does not bother me, as long as it's know when you walk in. Our chinese take out place is cash only-but you see the sign at the door before you walk in, so you know.
I would be kind of irked if it was a salon though, esp paying a lot of money, I may not even have the cash available.

Re: Do "Cash Only" businesses bother you?
In general, no it doesn't bother me- especially at places like a pizza place, bagel shop, nail salon. But anything over $50 you should be able to charge. My dog recently needed surgery. It wound up being $2700. After the surgery the Dr. tells me he doesn't take credit cards. I didn't even have my check book on me. I wound up hitting the ATM on my personal card and business card to pull out cash. I gave him a check for the difference the next day.

I understand why they dont want to take CC's, but most people dont carry much cash these days. Usually I wind up having to get money from their ATM and pay a $3 charge to take my own money out.

ITA. I went someplace where I have used my card before. When we got there it said cash only and there was a new ATM with a ridiculous fee. I was so mad.

Re: Do "Cash Only" businesses bother you?
I bothers me when its a scam to get you to use the ATM they own. It also raises an eyebrow for me with certain businesses that they may not be reporting all of their sales. If I get the feeling they aren't paying their share of taxes & sales tax I paid to them I'm also bothered by that so I usually will not shop there again.
We frequent a small family owned diner that is cash only, that is the only place with that policy that I visit regularly.

I own a business, and the fees for MC/Visa are closer to 3%, while Amex is near 7%. It's the cost of doing business and should be allocated as such. I love when someone gives me cash, and I'll usually give them a bit of a break, but it definitely isn't worth losing out on business.

Sometimes higher! Non-qualifying cards can get up over 3%. And then you have all sorts of fees if someone rebuts the charge.. usually around 20.. EVEN if the cardholder admits they were wrong. And if you lose for whatever reason.. the cardholder gets the merchandise and you get stuck. Plus you have to watch out for fraud. Add in monthly fees, minimums and the cost of reconciling.. and it's really pricey when you are a small store.
I like cash discounts too!

no, as long as it's clear before i spend my time in the store. i hate to get to the register and be told that it's cash only.
what i *hate* are when stores have credit card minimums. it violates the agreement between the store and the cc company and really bothers me.

No so long as it's clear and it's posted that it's a cash only business. If it is someplace like a salon though, then it would bother me because salons can get pricey and sometimes you end up having unexpected things done so the price when you walk in is not always clear cut.
I know that cc fees can be high so I DO understand the "cash only" policy in some places. I'm old school though and still carry money around because I can't stomach taking out my debit card to charge a pack of gum or a soda.

I don't care as long as I know in advance, like a big sign before I walk in the door.

I was really annoyed when Bobby's Burger Palace open up at the Smithhaven mall, and was cash-only. I understand small businesses not being able to afford to take CC's, but there was no reason for BBP to not take them.... They eventually changed their setup, and they do take CC's now. They lost a lot of our business until we found out they took CCs.

Re: Do "Cash Only" businesses bother you?
I see it as a part of business. I factor it as part of my price of running my business. I only use pp or square for cc and not a typical retail cash reg/swipe.
I will take cash and waiver the tax but I find for my business check is better or credit since its a paper trail.
